- Sophomore Keaton McCann led all players with four goals as the #12 Union College men's lacrosse team used a dominant defensive effort and some opportunistic scoring to defeat SUNY Cortland, 12-7, in the second round of the 2019 NCAA Div. III Men's Lacrosse Championships, held on Wednesday afternoon at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium. With the win, Union (14-3) improves to 6-0 all-time in NCAA Tournament games at Frank Bailey Field and advances to the third round of the NCAA Tournament for the third time in school history. The Dutchmen will get a third shot against #1 Rochester Institute of Technology on Saturday after the Tigers defeated John Carroll University by a 20-5 score on Wednesday night. In addition to McCann's four tallies, classmate Kieran McGovern also came up big with three goals on three shots in the first half to help the Dutchmen out to a 7-4 halftime lead. Junior Michael Sands added two goals and an assist for a three-point game of his own. Senior Jack Santilli made eight saves on 13 shots and picked up a team-high five ground balls, while the defensive unit forced Cortland into 22 turnovers, including three caused by junior Edward Winters. Cortland (14-5) started the game strong, getting goals by Brandon Stiles and Tristan Moreno to take a 2-0 lead 3:05 into the contest. McCann and Sands knotted the game at two, but the Red Dragons got one more on a nice behind-the-back goal from Joey Panariello to put the visitors up 3-2 after one quarter. Santilli made four saves in the opening 15 minutes to help keep his team in the contest. The Dutchmen took control of the game in the second quarter, scoring five straight goals to take the lead for good. McGovern had a huge quarter for the home team, scoring all three of his goals in the span of seven minutes that, combined with a Sands tally, put Union up 6-3 with 6:12 left. McCann added his second later in the period as the Dutchmen outshot the Red Dragons 14-5 and forced six turnovers in the stanza. The run continued for Union in the third quarter, with goals by McCann and junior Jack Kaufman extending the lead and eight Cortland turnovers helping to keep the visitors at bay. After a Cortland goal to start off the fourth, Union got goals from McCann, sophomore Aidan Flood and junior Kerry Lyne in the fourth to put the game away. For the game, Union finished with a 42-27 advantage in shots on the offensive end and, defensively, forced Cortland into 22 turnovers, 13 of which were caused by the Dutchmen. No game time for Saturday was immediately announced. Check back to UnionAthletics.com tomorrow for more information on the next round of the NCAA Tournament.
