(U-M Lacrosse Stadium) Score: #14 Denver 9, #8 Michigan 5 Records: U-M (16-4), Denver (16-3) Next U-M Event: Season Completed ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 8-ranked University of Michigan women's lacrosse team saw its historic season come to a close as it fell to No. 14 Denver, 9-5, in a defensive battle in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday (May 12) afternoon. The first half was all about defense as just four goals were scored, marking the lowest scoring total in a half for both teams. Denver went up, 2-0, including one man-up goal before Caitlin Muir ripped a shot into the lower-left corner of the cage with 7:44 remaining in the opening half. The Pioneers increased their lead to two with 2:44 left with a free position goal. With just 24 second left on the first-half clock, Michigan looked to cut the lead to one, but a last-second shot did not find its way to the back of the net and U-M trailed, 3-1, at halftime. » Michigan's historic season came to a close after a 9-5 loss to Denver in the NCAA Tournament. » Mira Shane ended her career as Michigan's career wins leader. » Senior Adriana Pendino ended her career as the first Wolverine to reach 40 goals in a season. Denver opened up the second half with two straight goals before senior Adriana Pendino scored her lone of the game on a free position to bring Michigan within three, 5-2. With each Wolverine goal, Denver answered to maintain at least a three-goal lead over the remaining 13 minutes of play. In the closing four minutes, Molly Garrett and Nadine Stewart scored back-to-back goals for Michigan to cut the lead to three, but the Pioneers added one final goal to advance to the NCAA quarterfinal with a 9-5 victory. Junior Molly Garrett produced her third straight multi-goal game with two against Denver, while Pendino ended her career as the only Wolverine to score 40 goals in a season, ending the year with 41. Senior goalkeeper Mira Shane leaves Michigan as its all-time wins leader, going 13-4 in her senior campaign and making 11 saves on Sunday to produce her seventh game this season with 10 stops or more. Defensively, Michigan had eight caused turnovers with Maggie Kane getting two, while Shane had three ground balls and both Madison Richardson and Kane had two. The Wolverines closed out the best season in program history as it earned 16 wins, more than doubling its total of seven from a year ago, defeated six ranked opponents and made its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. Head coach Hannah Nielsen helped U-M to break the single-season goals record with 261, while three players were named All-Big Ten and Shane was the program's first Tewaaraton Award Nominee.
