EAST HARTFORD, Conn. – Pat Spencer scored a game-high 11 points with a career-best six goals to go with five assists, but top-seeded Penn State University used a 5-0 run to close the game for a 21-14 victory over No. 8-seed Loyola University Maryland on Sunday afternoon in the NCAA Quarterfinals. Spencer spearheaded two Loyola runs with his scoring and assists. The first came in the first quarter as he helped the Greyhounds (12-5 overall) rally from a 3-1 deficit to put Loyola in front, 6-3 when he assisted on an Aidan Olmstead goal with 2:31 to play in the quarter. Penn State (16-1), however, came back to score seven in a row and 11 of 12 to break open a 14-7 lead at halftime. The teams traded goals in the first five minutes of the third quarter as Olmstead and Kevin Lindley tallied goals off Spencer assists. A Brian Townsend goal for the Nittany Lions an even five minutes into the quarter pushed their lead to 16-9. Spencer again bulled his neck and scored four unassisted goals during a 5-0 Loyola run that pulled the Greyhounds within two, 16-14, with 2:16 left in the quarter. During that stretch in the third quarter, Spencer set the Patriot League single-season record for points, finishing the game with 114. His six goals were a career-best, and it was his seventh career game with 10 or more points. Spencer wrapped up his time for Loyola lacrosse as the NCAA all-time leader in career assists (231), and he finished second in total points (380). He set Loyola and Patriot League records in both points and assists, and he finished second all-time with 149 goals. His 65 assists and 114 points this season are both Loyola and Patriot League records, and his 49 goals rank sixth in Loyola single-season history and seventh in the conference. Jacob Stover tied his career-high in the game with 19 saves, finishing the year with 250, a total that ranks second in Loyola single-season history and third in the Patriot League. It is also the most in the nation through the end of Loyola's game. Bailey Savio won 16 faceoffs and set the Loyola single-season record for faceoff wins (246) while also extending his record for ground balls in a season to 141. Both of those numbers are second in Patriot League single-season history. Olmstead, John Duffy and Dan Wigley each scored twice for the Greyhounds, while Chase Scanlan and Lindley added one a piece. Spencer contributed to 11 of Loyola's 14 goals with his five assists; Alex McGovern had Loyola's other assist in the game. The game marked Loyola's third appearance in the NCAA Quarterfinal round over the last four years, and this year's senior class – Bobby Austin, Damase Bagbonon, P.J. Brown, Bryce Carrasco, Nick Cunningham, Duffy, Richie Easterly, Lucas Jackson, McGovern, Spencer, Stover and Paul Volante – became the first Loyola class to reach the NCAA Championships all four years since the Class of 2001. Loyola is also one of four teams – Duke University, the University of Maryland and Notre Dame University – to reach three quarterfinals since 2016.
