The Maryland men's lacrosse team fell to the third-seeded Virginia Cavaliers in the NCAA Quarterfinal round Saturday, 13-12 in overtime. Despite five unanswered Maryland goals in the third and fourth quarters to make it 12-7, Virginia came back, scoring five unanswered of their own, including the controversial equalizer which forced overtime. Jared Bernhardt and Anthony DeMaio paced the Terps offense with four goals apiece, including Bernhardt's first-half hat trick. His 51 goals on the season is the second-most in in a single season in Maryland history, just behind Mark Douglas (1991) with 52. Maryland had the early offensive edge, jumping to a 2-0 lead behind goals from Bernhardt and DeMaio. Neither team would have a lead of over two goals until midway through the fourth quarter when both the Terps and Virginia went on five-goal runs, as the game was mostly back-and-forth through 45 minutes. Logan Wisnauskas scored late in the first quarter to give the Terps a 3-1 lead, and after Virginia answered with two goals to tie it up, Bernhardt scored his second and third to complete the first-half hat trick. Virginia scored the last goal of the half with just five seconds remaining, but Maryland led 6-5 through 30 minutes. Virginia opened the scoring in the second half right away in the third quarter, but Wisnauskas scored his second of the game to make it 7-6. The Cavaliers again tied it up halfway through the third quarter, but Maryland began its five-goal run with Bernhart's fourth of the day, then additional tallies from DeMaio, Louis Dubick, and Christian Zawadzki, made it 12-7 with 10 minutes remaining. The Terps held their five-goal lead for just one minute before Virginia started to cut away at the deficit. Three goals in a one-minute span starting at 3:25 left in regulation made it 12-11, and the controversial equalizer struck at 1:14 and forced sudden-death overtime, in which Virginia scored just 45 seconds in. Maryland ends the season 12-4 and will miss the NCAA Semifinals for the first time in six years and just its second time in the last nine years.
