The University of Detroit Mercy men's lacrosse team used two big runs during the contest to erase a deficit and to extend a lead as the Titans defeated Jacksonville, 9-8, on Saturday at Total Sports Park in Washington Township.
Junior Seth Mendell posted his fourth career hat trick with three goals, junior Alex Jarzembowski was 15-of-21 in faceoffs with five ground balls and scored his first two collegiate markers and sophomore Logan Shamblin tied his career high with 15 saves.
Mendell started the game with a quick score, but then Jacksonville went on a 3-0 run.
The Titans came right back with three-straight goals to take the lead and it was 4-4 at the break. Detroit Mercy then scored four in a row in the second half to jump out to an 8-4 advantage midway through the fourth and the game-winning ninth marker was tallied by Jarzembowski off a faceoff win with 6:51 left.
Senior Emmett Green and sophomore Paul Manuszak each had two caused turnovers, with Manuszak picked up five ground balls.
The Titans were outshot, 47-38, but held a 29-23 advantage on ground balls and saw Jacksonville commit 18 turnovers.
Detroit Mercy will now have two weeks off before traveling to nationally-ranked Notre Dame on Saturday, Feb. 16.
First Quarter:
The Titans won the opening faceoff and just 30 seconds into the contest, Mendell struck for his first goal
Jacksonville would take a 3-1 lead, but back came the Titans as sophomore Ryan Figueiras took a pass from junior Matt Turner and Detroit Mercy scored on the man-up at 5:15
On the next faceoff, Jarzembowki - who was 6-of-8 in the period - won the faceoff and beat the keeper for his first collegiate goal
Later in the period off a Dolphins turnover, Mendell would find the back of the net and the red, white and blue led 4-3 after the first
Second Quarter:
The teams were scoreless for the first 12 minutes, but Jacksonville tied it up at the 2:18 mark
That was the lone score as Jacksonville held a 23-18 shots advantage and Shamblin had seven saves
Third Quarter:
The Titans went on another 3-0 run taking advantage of another Jacksonville penalty as senior Matthew Vangalen found freshman Cam Kostus and the rookie scored his first goal midway through the period
Turner added a strike at 2:46 and then once again a faceoff victory by Jarzembowski led right to a goal as sophomore Ollie Nigh beat the keeper for a 7-4 lead after three quarters
Fourth Quarter:
The run extended to 4-0 with 8:11 left as Detroit Mercy used another man-up situation as Kostus fed Mendell and he tallied his fourth career hat trick
The Dolphins stopped that run, but Jarzembowski continued his dominance at the faceoffs winning another match-up and then streaking down the field for his second goal with 6:51 left
The Dolphins then rallied late to pull within, 9-8, but Manuszak was able to come away with a turnover with 23 seconds remaining and the Titans ran out the clock
