The 14th-ranked University of Richmond men's lacrosse program suffered its second-straight defeat Tuesday afternoon as the Spiders dropped a heartbreaking 12-11 overtime loss to visiting Mount St. Mary's at Robins Stadium. The Mountaineers scored the game-tying goal with 1.4 seconds remaining in regulation before scoring the game-winning goal with 1:38 remaining in the first overtime. Richmond (3-3) committed 16 turnovers in the loss, including five in the first quarter when the Mountaineers scored the game's first four goals and five in the fourth quarter when Mount St. Mary's rallied from two goals down to force overtime. Additionally, the Spiders lost the face-off battle by a 18-9 margin, including the last seven of the game. Mount St. Mary's (2-4) picked up its second-straight win over a Southern Conference opponent (VMI) as it scored the game's first four goals in the opening 12 minutes of the game. Chris DiPretoro led the way with a pair of goals as the Mountaineers had a 3-0 lead less than six minutes into the game. Junior Tyler Shoults (Warners, N.Y.) scored the Spiders' first of the game at the 1:48 mark before the Mountaineers added another for a 5-1 lead. Shoults and sophomore attack Ryan Lanchbury (Burlington, Ontario) added goals in the final 14 seconds of the first quarter to pull Richmond within 5-3 at the break. Mount St. Mary's scored the first two of the second quarter to take a 7-3 lead before Richmond righted the ship with four-straight goals, tying the game at 7-7 early in the third. Lanchbury scored two more goals for his fifth game of the year with at least three goals before Shoults added his third of the game. Senior Ryan Lee (South Salem, N.Y.) tallied his first of the game to even the score. After the Mountaineers took an 8-7 lead, Richmond scored three-straight and looked in control with a 10-8 lead with 8:21 remaining. Shoults added his career-high fourth of the game while Tate Gallagher (Ardmore, Pa.) and Mitch Savoca (Newtown, Conn.) found the back of the net for the two-goal cushion. The lead was short-lived though as Mount St. Mary's scored a pair of goals in 34 seconds as Luke Frankeny tallied both, tying the game at 10-10. The game would go back-and-forth until the 3:58 mark of the fourth when senior attack Teddy Hatfield (Summit, N.J.) gave Richmond the lead back at 11-10 for his 100th career goal. The goal moved Hatfield into sole possession in the Richmond record books for most career goals scored, surpassing former Spider and current assistant coach Mitch Goldberg's previous record of 99 career goals. Richmond was on defense for the final 3:58 of the game as the Mountaineers maintained possession. Mount St. Mary's had six shots in the final 3:58 of the game and redshirt sophomore goalie Jack Rusbuldt (Richmond, Va.) was up to the task making three saves until the final seconds of regulation. Frankeny tied the game with 1.4 seconds remaining as he took a pass from Brenden McCarthy and scored in traffic at the front of the net to send the game into overtime. Mount St. Mary's won the faceoff in overtime but the Spiders forced a turnover as Jack Cook (Mechanicsville, Va.) gave the Spiders' possession. Lanchbury had a great look from in close, but Mountaineer goalie Dylan Furnback made a spectacular save, setting the table for the game-winner. DiPretoro scored the clincher with 1:38 remaining, beating Rusbuldt low for the Mountaineer victory. Mount St. Mary's finished the game with a 47-33 advantage in shots, including a 16-7 edge in the first quarter and a 10-5 advantage in the fourth. Rusbuldt finished with 15 saves in the loss while Furnback added 14 saves for the Mountaineers, none bigger than the one on Lanchbury with 1:50 remaining. Richmond continues its six-game home stretch Saturday afternoon when it opens SoCon play. The Spiders host VMI for a noon face off at Robins Stadium. Admission is free.
