Despite a flurry of first half goals, the St. Bonaventure men's lacrosse team fell to Saint Joseph's, 15-7, in its second-ever game as a Division I program. After two Hawks goals, Sean Westley kicked the Bonnies scoring off with 10:04 left in the first quarter after Austin Blumbergs fed him a pass on the left edge of the cage and he finished across his body to beat the Hawks keeper. For the Whitby, Ontario native, it was his first career Division I goal and the first-ever goal in the history of the reborn St. Bonaventure men's lacrosse program. Blumbergs earned his first collegiate assist. Down 2-1, the Bonnies tied it up three minutes later with a goal from Brandon Oakes. Unassisted, Oakes came around the top right edge and bounced a shot in on the bottom right of the cage for the first of his collegiate career. Another Saint Joseph's goal gave the Hawks some space, but the Bonnies, led by Matthew DeGirolamo, tied it right back up, 3-3. DeGirolamo and John Fox sprinted as a duo down the field and Fox dished a perfectly timed pass to set up for the score. It was the first assist for Fox and first goal for DeGirolamo. The Bonnies scoring stagnated after their third goal at the 6:04 mark of the first quarter, and the Hawks took advantage. Saint Joseph's, which went undefeated last year in the NEC and was making its 2019 debut, closed the opening half on a 6-0 run and carried a 9-3 lead into intermission, but the Bonnies rebounded nicely to start the second. With 9:02 left in the third, Cian Collins added to the list of first-time collegiate scorers to cut the deficit to five, and at 6:13, Zach Betler also found the net to make it 10-5. Two more third quarter goals from St. Bonaventure, the first career from Austin Blumbergs and second on the day from Westley, capped a strong 15 minutes that saw the Bonnies outscore the Hawks 4-3 and trail only 12-7 heading into the fourth. However, the hosts put the clamps down on defense over the final frame. The Bonnies were unable to crack the scoreboard while the Hawks found the back of the net three times to clinch their first victory of the season, 15-7. Ben Mazur made 13 saves in net for the Bonnies in his collegiate debut. Hawks keeper Mike Adler made nine saves to earn the win. In all, the Bonnies offense tallied 25 shot attempts. After two games in two weeks, the Bonnies take a weekend off before traveling to Manhattan on Feb. 23. That contest will mark the official debut of the Bonnies in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference as the Brown and White makes its MAAC debut.
