The No. 1 Salisbury University men's lacrosse team rolled to a 21-6 win at Sea Gull Stadium on Friday evening against visiting Illinois Wesleyan University in the first meeting between the two programs. The teams traded early goals finding a 2-2 contest just over five minutes into the game. Salisbury scored first with Josh Melton starting a big day, finishing off an assist from Corey Gwin, but the Titans (4-1) answered 48 seconds later, drawing even at 1-1. Zach Pompea's unassisted tally gave Salisbury (7-0) the lead for less than a minute again as Illinois Wesleyan answered. But Gwin was able to give the Sea Gulls the lead for good when he finished off a Melton assist, sparking a 6-0 run which carried into the second quarter. Melton, Gwin, or Pompea figured in each of the six goals with Melton scoring twice, Pompea assisted four of the goals and Tyler Snyder scored three times. After the Titans made it 8-3, the Sea Gulls closed the opening half on a 4-1 run to take a comfortable 12-4 lead at the break. Carrying a man-up chance into the third quarter, the Sea Gulls scored 11 seconds into the period before the Titans scored their final two goals of the game, cutting their deficit to 13-7 but six goals was as close as Illinois Wesleyan would be, with Salisbury finishing the game by scoring the last nine goals. Melton scored six goals in the game and added four assists, nearly doubling his season point total as he came into the day with 24 points through the first six games. It marked his second 10-point game of his career, having finished with four goals and six assists at Widener University on February 16, but the six goals marks a career high. Gwin finished with five goals and a pair of assists while Pompea had a career-best five assists to go with a pair of goals. Four goalkeepers saw time in the cage for Salisbury with Brandon Warren getting the start and making seven saves in just under 47 minutes. Chandler Dabbs made five saves, despite playing just 6:24 in goal while T.J. Ellis had three stops and Brady Emmi turned away two shots. The defense was solid throughout the contest totaling 13 caused turnovers with Drew Borkowicz and Riley Ford totaling a team-best two while Brett Malamphy and Kevin Murphy combined for 14 groundballs totaling nine and four respectively. Brad Apgar completed his night with four groundballs and a caused turnover. The Sea Gulls are back in action on Sunday, March 17 hosting Montclair State University at Sea Gull Stadium, beginning at 1 p.m.
