On a day in which Salisbury men's lacrosse celebrated a historical team, the 1994 national championship team, that captured the programs first ever title junior attackman Josh Melton posted a historical performance turning in a career-best outing as the No. 1 Sea Gulls downed visiting State University of New York at Geneseo, 18-3. Melton finished the game with a team and career-high 11 points netting five goals and totaling another career and team-best six assists. Salisbury (9-0) jumped out to a 6-0 lead after the opening quarter and Melton had a hand in four of the six markers including the first two. Tyler Snyder, who finished the game with his sixth hat trick of the season, netted the first goal of the contest finishing off a Melton pass just over a minute in. Melton would net one his two first quarter markers 40 seconds later finishing off a pass from Snyder to build the lead to 2-0. He continued his career-day in the second quarter tallying five points, netting two goals and dishing out three assists, having a hand in all five of the Salisbury goals. After the Knights (3-5) netted their only marker of the first half to cut the deficit to five, Melton recorded his third assist of the day when he found Pierre Armstrong, for one his two tallies on the afternoon. After back-to-back assists, one of which was yet another connection with Snyder, Melton tallied the final goal of the opening 30 minutes to give the home team an 11-1 lead at the break. Melton would connect one more time with Armstrong in the third quarter to record his record breaking sixth assist while popping in his fifth and final marker of the day in the fourth quarter finishing off an assist from Armstrong this time to push the advantage to 16-2. The defense continued its impressive play doing something it hasn't done in almost a full calendar year, holding its opponent to six goals or less for the third straight outing. The last time the Sea Gulls accomplished that feat was last season April 21st to May 1st when it held Frostburg State University, St. Mary's College of Maryland, and Christopher Newport University to two, four, and three goals respectively. The unit forced 29 total Geneseo turnovers causing 11 of them as Kevin Murphy and Matt O'Callaghan led the way with two each. The defense also limited the Knights to converting just 13-of-24 clear attempts while also shutting down their man-up unit, holding them to a 0-2 mark on the afternoon. Salisbury returns to action on Wednesday, March 27 when it travels to No. 5 Cabrini University. Faceoff is set for 7 p.m. at Edith Robb Dixon Field.
