Top ranked Salisbury University men's lacrosse cruised to a 26-9 victory in Capital Athletic Conference play on Saturday afternoon over Southern Virginia University. The Sea Gulls saw impressive performances from both T.J. Ellis, who made his first collegiate start for the maroon and gold (15-1, 4-1 CAC), and Cross Ferrara, who recorded a new career-high in both points and goals. Armstrong finished the game with a team-high in both goals and points, netting six markers and totaling seven points. Ferrara had a hand in all of Salisbury's first four goals of the contest, netting three unassisted markers before dishing out his lone assist of the game, to spark a 6-0 run which covered a three-minute span in the opening 15 minutes. Ferrara continued his strong outing in the second half, netting his final two tallies of the afternoon in the third quarter. His pushed the lead to 16-4 when he finished off one of Zach Pompea's team-leading three assists. Ferrara capped his afternoon just over three minutes later the same way he began it with an unassisted effort to extend the Sea Gulls' lead to 18-4. Ellis in the meantime earned the win behind a strong first start, making seven saves and allowing just four goals in almost 42 minutes of game action. He set the tone early making two saves in the opening four minutes of the contest but none may have been more important than at the 5:30 mark of the first quarter. After Ferrara fired home his first marker of the day to give the home team a 1-0 advantage, an errant pass after the faceoff win for the maroon and gold led to a loose ball in front of the net that was picked up by Southern Virginia's Seth Millington. Millington faked low and tried to go high but Ellis, who had to scramble back into the cage, didn't fall for the fake and stepped up in his crease to deflect the shot attempt off his chest protector and send the ball into the air, which was pulled down by Brad Greik and led to both a good clear attempt by the maroon and gold and goal less than 50 seconds later. Brett Malamphy was once again dominant from the faceoff X winning 21-of-24 faceoffs, scooping up 14 of the Sea Gulls' 59 groundballs for the afternoon. Matt O'Callaghan and Brad Apgar finished tied for the team-lead in caused turnovers with two apiece as part of a defensive unit that caused 12 overall. Salisbury returns to action on Wednesday, April 24 when it travels to St. Mary's College of Maryland to close out the regular season. Faceoff is set for 4 p.m.
