The seventh-ranked York men's lacrosse team used a three-goal run in the third quarter to claim a 7-6 victory over 12th-ranked Washington and Lee on Saturday at Kinsley Field.
W&L (0-1) took its first lead of the game (5-4) at the 11:51 mark of the third quarter when sophomore attackman Taylor Witherell (Wilmington, Del. / Salesianum) found the back of the net off a feed from junior attackman Mike Weaver (Lititz, Pa. / Cedar Crest).
However, the Spartans (1-0) answered with a goal by senior midfielder Brad Casale off an assist from sophomore midfielder Dylan Wolf just 1:12 later to tie the game at 5-5 with 10:39 left in the penultimate quarter.
Senior attackman Hunter Davis gave York a 6-5 lead with a goal off an assist from Eric Ranck at the 7:37 mark, and senior attackman Brendan McGrath capped the run with a goal off an assist from senior attackman Thomas Pfeiffer with 31 seconds left in the frame.
The Generals pulled to within a single goal with 9:48 left in the game on a score by Taylor Witherell off an assist from sophomore midfielder Ben Mulholland (Sewickley, Pa. / Sewickley Academy). But W&L simply could not find the equalizer, as the Spartans claimed their fourth straight victory over the Blue & White.
York held the lead four times in the first half, only to see the Generals have the answer each time. Sophomore goalkeeper Jack Taylor (Baltimore, Md. / Saint Paul's) posted 12 saves in the opening 30 minutes, which produced a 4-4 game at the break.
For the game, York held a 38-31 advantage in shots, while W&L claimed a 36-34 edge in ground balls. The two teams combined for 48 turnovers (23 for W&L) and York won 9 of the 17 faceoffs in the contest.
Taylor Witherell scored a pair of goals, while Mulholland notched one goal and one assist. Senior midfielder Nick Anders (Richmond, Va. / Collegiate) registered a pair of assists and Taylor finished with a career-high tying 16 saves.
Davis posted two goals and one assist, and McGrath had two goals to lead the York offense. First-year goalkeeper Jack Michael logged 10 saves in his first career game.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Christopher Newport for a 7:00 pm contest.
