University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse redshirt junior Billy Philpott and freshman Gabriel Procyk posted a hat trick each and senior Sean Sconone turned aside 16 saves as the Minutemen downed the Great Danes 14-8 at UAlbany's Tom and Mary Casey Stadium in Albany, New York, on Tuesday afternoon. Sophomore midfielder Kevin Cutinella and junior attack Devin Spencer added two goals and as many assists for a pair of four-point outings. Senior midfielder Ben Spencer and sophomore midfielder Kevin Tobin added two goals each. Sophomore attack Chris Connolly dished out three assists. Sophomore attack Clayton Proctor, Procyk,, Jeff Trainor and Jackson Suboch helped on one goal as well. Senior Tom Meyers was dominant at the faceoff dot with a 19-of-26 day that included a career-high-tying 13 groundballs. He bested a half-dozen Great Danes who stepped to the X, including Pat Barrow (1-4), Connor Filipowski (0-1), Sean Gleason (0-3), Tanner Hay (0-1), Chauncey Hill (0-1) and Austin Jones (6-16). In addition to 16 saves, Sconone caused a pair of turnovers and had two groundballs in the crease. Senior close defenseman Isaac Paparo scooped up six groundballs and had a caused turnover as well. Tehoka Nanticoke led the UAlbany offense with four points on three goals and an assist. Nate Siekierski had 14 saves against as many goals allowed in the cage. Massachusetts began the third quarter with a slim advantage, but turned the 5-3 margin to a six-goal lead on the strength of goals by Cutinella, Philpott, Devin Spencer and Tobin. Cutinella earned his first collegiate goal during the span on a wrap-around play as Cutinella raced from X at the right post and dropped a low shot behind Siekierski for his inaugural point as a Minuteman. Cutinella followed with his second collegiate point on the next goal as he found Philpott in front for Philpott's third conversion of the day. Tobin capped the run after Connolly saw Tobin open during an extra-man chance as Connolly collected all three of his assists on the day during the run. UAlbany pulled back within 9-6 with less than six minutes to go in the third as Ron John scored in front of two Nanticoke tallies, but Massachusetts responded with a three-goal run of its own. Devin Spencer dished out assists to Tobin and Procyk spanning the end of third and beginning of the fourth quarters before Cutinella added his third point of the day. Cutinella worked a swim-move around a UAlbany defender and flicked a pass to an unmarked Devin Spencer on the crease while crashing to the turf as Massachusetts doubled up Albany, 12-6 with 10:44 to go in the game. David Diamond briefly brought the Great Danes back within five, but Cutinella and Procyk scored in succession to double-up the Great Danes at 14-7 with seven minutes, 59 seconds to go. An early miscue by UAlbany led to Massachusetts' first goal as Ben Spencer made the most of an offsides call and converted on the extra-man chance only 61 seconds into the game Philpott doubles the lead less than five minutes later. After a restart near midfield, Philpott went unchallenged into the middle of the Great Danes' defense and fired in a low shot for the 2-0 lead. Philpott called his own number again for the team's third goal and his second of the day. Philpott took possession near the midline, shifted to his left, pivoted for shooting space and fired in his second of the day unassisted. Procyk's first of the day came in the midst of a loose ball scrum in front of the UAlbany cage. With a half-dozen players fighting for possession, Procyk raked the groundball into his crosse and whipped in a sidearm shot in one motion for the rookie's 10th goal of the year at the 11:16 mark of the second. Ben Spencer added his second of the day sandwiched around a pair of Albany tallies as UMass earned its 5-3 advantage midway through. The Minutemen led in shots, 49-42; groundballs, 34-27 and saves, 16-14. Massachusetts finished 20-of-22 on clears while UAlbany went 21-for-24. UMass was also 2-for-3 on extra-man chances while the Maroon and White defense limited the Great Danes to 0-for-5. Men's Lacrosse wraps up four consecutive road games with a trip to NJIT on Sat., March 9 for a Noon tilt with the Highlanders.
