Matthew DeGirolamo scored the first home goal in St. Bonaventure history and gave the Bonnies an early 1-0 lead in the first quarter. Austin Blumbergs and John Killcommons produced multi-goal performances in the Bonnies eight goal effort. Ben Mazur had 16 saves, staying strong in the face of Detroit Mercy's 31 shots. ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. — The St. Bonaventure men's lacrosse team made history Saturday evening, hosting its first game under the lights at the Marra Athletics Complex. The Bonnies scored the game's first goal - a tally from Matthew DeGirolamo with 11:22 left in the first quarter - but it would be a veteran Detroit Mercy (4-2, 1-0 MAAC) squad that prevailed, 16-8. John Killcommons and Austin Blumbergs both scored twice to lead the Bona offense. Bonnies fans got to see one for the record books when DeGirolamo beat the Titans keeper for the initial goal on home turf for the Bonnies. It was DeGirolamo's fourth goal of the season and the second straight game the Bonnies scored first. Last game against Manhattan, Jackson Rose scored 50 seconds in, assisted by DeGirolamo. Unfortunately for St. Bonaventure, that would be their only lead of the game. The Titans went on a 6-0 run over the next 18 minutes before the Bonnies got back on the board with four minutes left before half thanks to aBlumbergs goal, assisted by Zack Belter. It was Blumbergs' third goal of the season, and Belter's third point and first assist. Another quick 2-0 Titans run extended the lead to 8-2, but St. Bonaventure cut the halftime deficit to five with 2:17 left in the second via Killcommons' first career goal. Killcommons took a pass for Sean Westley, who earned his fifth assist of the season, and whipped a riser past the right shoulder of Shamblin in net. The Bonnies (0-4, 0-2 MAAC) came back from the break strong. Two minutes into the third, Westley scored the second man-up goal of the season to cut the Titans lead to four. The next nine minutes were a defensive stand-off between the two squads. Only one goal was scored over the first 11 minutes of the third before A.J. Van Voorhis tallied two quick goals in 57 seconds and Ollie Nigh added a third 10 seconds later off a face-off win to break open the game. Nick Conklin stopped scoring the run before the third quarter horn sounded. The long-pole scored his first collegiate goal when he came sprinting in from the midfield and fired one from long range to make it 11-5 heading into the final 15 minutes. The fourth started the way the third ended for the Bonnies. Two quick Detroit Mercy goals made it 13-5, the biggest lead of the game. Bonas bounced back when Killcommons scored his second of the game and second on the season thanks to a 6-4 man-up opportunity. That began a back-and-forth between the two squads over the final six minutes. The Bonnies added two more before time ticked down, one from Blumbergs, his second on the day, and the final tally from Cian Collins with 2:23 remaining. Overall, the Bonnies had their best performance of the season on extra-man opportunities. They came in 1-for-9 on the season, but executed at a 3-9 clip Saturday. Bona also had its most successful game clearing the ball, going 27-for-31 and a perfect 8-for-8 in the first quarter. In goal, Ben Mazur made his second collegiate start, and turned in a formidable effort against the talented Titans offense. He made 15 saves over 60 minutes while facing 31 total shots. The Bonnies' main struggles came in the face-off circle. Detroit Mercy, led by Alex Jarzembowski, who came into the came winning over 60 percent of his faceoffs, went 18-for-21 in the faceoff X and the Titans as a team went 21-for-24. St. Bonaventure will have a quick turnaround when they travel to Siena on Wednesday for a 3:00 p.m. matchup in the state capital as MAAC play continues. GAME NOTES: Detroit Mercy was picked second in the MAAC Preseason Coaches' Poll and has already defeated two teams receiving votes in the national polls - Jacksonville and Marquette. Killcommons led the Bonnies with nine shots while the team finished with 32 shots overall. Six of Killcommons' shot attempts were on goal. Belter finished with four groundballs and three caused turnovers. Westley totaled four points after scoring a goal and handing our three assists. Seth Mendell scored a game-high six goals for Detroit Mercy while Matthew Vangalen had three assists. Logan Shamblin held the lead by making 11 saves for the Titans. Approximately 30 members of St. Bonaventure's former intercollegiate men's lacrosse teams from 1989-93 returned to campus for the first home game of the reborn program.
