Senior Luke McCaleb (Chevy Chase, MD) registered a career high eight points with three goals and five assists, while sophomore George Grell (Short Hills, NJ) and freshman Darian Cook (Redding, CT) scored three goals each, to lead the Brown men's lacrosse team to a 20-7 season-opening win over Quinnipiac Saturday afternoon at Stevenson-Pincince Field. The 11thmeeting between the two New England schools proved to be a one-sided game as the Bears led 9-3 at the half and extended their lead to 15-5 after three quarters, taking a 10 goal lead into the fourth quarter. "It was a great team win and start to the season," said head coach Mike Daly. "All phases made contributions. Really proud of our defensive effort today." McCaleb's three goals came on eight shots and he also picked up three ground balls. Cook scored his first career goals, while Grell added two assists to go with his three goals. Senior Carson Song (Charlotte, NC), senior Jackson Newsome (Arlington, VA), senior Michael Panepinto (Needham, MA) and sophomore Ryan Aughaven (Glen Head, NY) added two goals each for the Bears. Junior Phil Goss (San Francisco, CA), Brown's All-American goalie made eight saves and allowed seven goals, while his Quinnipiac counterpart Nick DiMuccio made 17 saves with 20 goals allowed. Brown also had a decisive 50-32 advantage in ground balls. The Bobcats were paced by Tyler Mackay, who scored three goals. While the Bears were able to find the back of the net, they struggled in the face-off x. Quinnipiac won nine of 13 face-offs in the opening half and finished with a 17-12 face-off advantage overall. Senior Riley Stewart (Darien, CT) got the Bears' season off to a good start, scoring just 10 seconds in for an early lead. Panepinto, Aughaven and Grell all scored goals in the opening quarter to help Brown build a 4-2 lead. Song opened the second scoring early in the quarter and Aughaven added his second goal at the 8:54 mark for a 6-2 Brown lead. Following a goal by Quinnipiac's Miles Tillman to cut Brown's lead to 6-3, Cook netted his first career goal for Brown, followed by goals by Newsome and McCaleb for a 9-3 Bears' lead at halftime. Brown kept the momentum in the second half, grabbing a 15-5 lead after three quarters on goals by Cook, Stewart, Grell, McCaleb, Grell and Newsome. The Bobcats made a move early in the fourth quarter on goals by MacKay and DiSalvo to trail, 15-7, but Cook scored his third goal of the game and Panepinto, Song, junior Jack Kniffin (Darien, CT) and freshman Colby Gendron (Bedford, NH) added one goal each to put the Bears back in control, 20-7.
