The University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse limited the high-scoring Brown offense to three goals over the opening three quarters and sophomore attack Chris Connolly posted six points en route to a 14-7 victory over the Bears at Garber Field on Saturday. The victory improved Massachusetts to 6-3 overall and extended the team's current win streak to five games. Brown fell to 3-4 overall with the loss. The defense neutralized Brown's attack with 16 save from senior goalie Sean Sconone, who added two groundballs and a caused turnover. Sophomore close defenseman Sam Eisenstadt had three of the team's 10 caused turnovers while redshirt senior long-stick midfielder Mike Elcock added two. Connolly notched his six points on three goals and as many assists. Freshman attack Gabriel Procyk added a hat trick of his own on three goals. Sophomore midfielder Kevin Tobin and junior position-mate Jeff Trainor notched three points apiece with two goals and an assist each. Redshirt junior two-way midfielder Billy Philpott added a two-goal outing while junior attack Devin Spencer dished out a pair of assists. Senior close defenseman Isaac Paparo and senior midfielder Ben Spencer had a goal each while freshman short-stick defensive midfielder Matthew Hill recorded his first collegiate point via an assist. Michael Panepinto's four points on three goals and an assist paced the Bears. Phil Goss took the loss in net with five saves versus 14 goals allowed. UMass stifled Brown throughout the opening half en route to a 5-1 lead at the break as the man-down defense closed out four Brown advantages without a goal allowed. Sconone posted half of his saves in the span, including six during the second quarter alone. On the offensive end, Procyk scored once each in the first and second quarters while Connolly potted one and slipped a pass to Tobin for a point in each quarter as well. Brown opened the third with its second goal of the day, which was Panepinto's first. However, Massachusetts responded with five consecutive goals and put the game out of reach by the time Ben Spencer made it a 10-2 lead his ninth of the year at the four-minute, 29-second mark. Trainor sparked the run when he stepped into a 15-yard, right-handed attempt that sailed over Goss's left shoulder and into the top-right corner of the goal with 11:56 to go. Senior faceoff special Tom Meyers, who finished 12-of-22 on the day with eight groundballs, won UMass the ensuing possession and Philpott added the team's seventh goal of the afternoon only 20 seconds after Trainor's. Procyk and Connolly found the back of the net in succession before Ben Spencer pushed the lead to eight goals with a put-back shot at the crease after Goss turned aside the initial shot. Luke McCaleb ended the scoring streak with his first of two goals on the day, but Massachusetts pushed the advantage to 12-3 during the final minute of the third quarter when Trainor and Paparo netted back-to-back goals 10 seconds apart. With the clock ticking toward the end of the third, Trainor cradled possession, rushed to the left of the cage and scored with a sidearm shot despite absorbing a push in the back that sent Trainor crashing to the turf as the ball rippled the goal netting. Another of Meyers' faceoff victories immediate led to the team's 12th goal as Connolly lobbed a cross-field pass to Paparo, who rifled a long-pole shot into the top-left corner with nine seconds left in the frame. Tobin notched his second of the day and 14th on the year with 12:34 to go while Connolly earned the hat trick with his 15th of the year only 73 seconds later. Massachusetts led in shots, 37-36, though Brown led in on-target attempts, 24-19. The groundball battle split evenly at 30-apiece and UMass turned the ball over 22 times to 20 by the Bears. Massachusetts' extra-man unit finished 1-of-3 while the man-down defense limited Brown to a 1-for-8 showing. Sconone rotated out of the lineup with 2:57 to play with only five goals allowed against his 16 saves. Cameron Carpenter filled Sconone's role in net for the remainder of the game, made one stop and allowed two goals. Massachusetts concludes its four-game homestand at Garber Field on Sat., March 30 with a 1 p.m. tilt with Drexel (3-4 overall). It marks the opening of CAA league play for each side.
