- Brown men's lacrosse was unable to overcome a five goal third quarter deficit, rallying to within three goals early in the fourth quarter, before falling to #5 Yale, 17-12, Saturday afternoon at Reese Field. Yale clinches an Ivy League Playoff berth with the win and improves to 8-2 overall, 3-1 in Ivy play. Brown falls to 4-7 overall, 2-2 in conference play. "This was a hard fought game today," said Brown head coach Mike Daly. "I'm proud of how our team competed, but we need to make a few more critical plays. We're excited to get back to work for our midweek game against Providence." Brown was paced by junior Jack Kniffin (Darien, CT) with a season high four goals and an assist. Bears' freshman Darian Cook (Redding, CT) added two goals and an assist and junior captain Luke McCaleb (Chevy Chase, MD) had two goals and three assists. Bears' junior goalie Phil Goss (San Francisco, CA) registered 15 saves, while Yale split time with its goalies, making seven combined saves. Matt Gaudet scored five goals and Jackson Morrill added four more to lead Yale. The difference came in the face-off x where TD Ierlan, who is considered by Yale, "the biggest transfer in the history of Division I lacrosse," captured 22-of-28 face-offs, scored a goal and had 16 ground balls for the Bulldogs. Yale out-shot the Bears by a 52-32 margin and had a 38-21 advantage in ground balls. Brown trailed 5-3 after one quarter, but goals by Ryan Aughavin (Glen Head, NY) and McCaleb early in the second quarter tied the game, 5-5. The two teams, exchange goals with Gaudet scoring for the Bulldogs and Cook finding the back of the net to tie the game, 6-6, with 9:33 remaining in the second quarter. After a flurry of goals, three by Yale and two by the Bears, the second by sophomore George Grell (Short Hills, NJ) with 3:00 left, cut the Bulldogs lead to 9-8. Morrill and Ierlan scored goals for the Bulldogs in the final minute for an 11-8 lead at the half. Kniffin opened the second half scoring to trail, 11-9, but the Bulldogs responded with three straight goals for a 14-9 advantage. Brown battled back to score three of the game's next four goals, two more by Kniffin and the last by McCaleb with 11:41 left in the game to trail, 15-12. Two late empty net goals by Yale accounted for the final score. The Bears will travel across town to face Providence College for a midweek game on Tuesday evening, April 16. Face-off is 7:00 pm at Chapey Field.
