Hempstead, NY - Alexa Mattera had three goals and goalkeeper Jess Smith made 11 saves for Hofstra, but No. 2 Maryland used an 8-0 run in the first half to break open a tie game en route to a 17-9 victory over the Pride Saturday afternoon at James M. Shuart Stadium. Hofstra saw its four-game win streak snapped and slipped to 4-2 on the season. Maryland upped its record to 5-0. The Terrapins jumped out to a 2-0 lead 3:26 into the game following unassisted goals from Erica Evans and Grace Griffin. Hofstra's Alyssa Parrella cut the deficit in half with an unassisted tally at the 4:48 mark. After Griffin put Maryland up by two, 3-1, with 24:51 on the clock, Parrella and Mattera scored back-to-back goals to knot the score at 3-3 with 21:44 to go. Mattera's goal was a short-handed one. The tie did not last long as Meghan Siverson scored a man-up goal with 21:18 to go, igniting the 8-0 run that culminated with Grace Griffin's third goal of the game, from Siverson, with 5:40 remaining. The Pride would get within six goal on two different occasions in the second half. The first came on Jackie Gatti's goal with 24:56 left in the game that made it 12-6. Maryland then ran off three straight goals before the Pride answered with three of their own. Arianna Esposito's no look, over the shoulder tally capped the run and made it 15-9 with 8:23 remaining. That would be the Pride's final goal of the game. Esposito and Parrella finished with two goals each for the Pride, who also got single goal-games from Gatti and Erin Demek. Katie Whelan had two assists, while Shannon Boyle had one. Darcie Smith had a team-high six draw controls and tied for team-high honors with three ground balls. Anna Kaufmann also had three ground balls for the Pride. Smith had two ground balls and one caused turnover in addition to her 11 saves. Grace Griffin had five goals and an assist to lead Maryland. The Terrapins also received multi-goal games from Evans (3), Siverson (2), Catie May (2), and Brindi Griffin (2). Lizzie Colson had seven draw controls and Kali Hartshorn had six. Evans and Julia Braig had a team-high three ground balls. Megan Taylor made six saves and allowed five goals in 34:07. Maddie McSally had six saves and allowed four goals over the final 25:53. Hofstra will be back in action March 9 at 3 p.m. at home versus Johns Hopkins.
