Jolted by an 8-0 first half run that featured four goals in a row from senior Caroline Steele, the No. 2 Maryland women's lacrosse team defeated No. 8 Penn, 14-9 on Wednesday night. "Glad that we were able to come away with a win," said head coach Cathy Reese. "Penn played us really tough. We have to focus on and get better in the turnover area and limit some of those. But a huge win for our program to go to 7-0 now against another top-10 team. To get our second top-10 win in four days is something that's pretty remarkable for these girls." Steele's four goals in the 8-0 run were part of a season-best five goal performance to lead the way offensively for Maryland. The Terps shot an extremely efficient 61-percent, with 14 goals on 23 shots. Senior Jen Giles and junior Brindi Griffin each tallied three points (two goals, one assist) while junior Kali Hartshorn also tallied two goals. Senior Megan Taylor was again outstanding in goal, posting 13 saves to only nine goals allowed, a .591 save percentage. Taylor saved Penn's shots at a .692 clip in the first half, posting a season half-high nine saves in the first half to only four goals allowed. The current IWLCA National Player of the Week, Taylor now has 69 saves at a .556 percentage. Graduate student Erica Evans notched the 200th goal (14th as a Terp) of her career in the first half while also adding an assist and two groundballs in the second half. Senior Julia Braig led with three groundballs and also had a caused turnover. Down 2-1 with 19 minutes to go in the first half, Maryland rattled off eight in a row, wiht the first two coming from B. Griffin and sophomore Catie May before Steele's personal 4-0 run. Evans and Giles finished off the run to give Maryland a 9-2 lead. The Terps also scored four of the first five goals in the second half, off tallies from sophomore Grace Griffin, Giles, Steele and Hartshorn to go up a game-best eight goals at 13-5. Penn would score four of the last five of the contest to give Maryland the 14-9 advantage at the end. Maryland moves to 7-0 on the season, beating their fourth top-10 opponent of the season. Tonight's win was also Maryland's 81st straight at home. Next, Maryland will kickoff conference play and finish out their three-game home-stand on Saturday as the Terps host Ohio State at noon.
