Second-ranked Maryland utilized four scoring runs of at least three straight goals to hand No. 7 James Madison an 18-5 defeat in NCAA women's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Sentara Park. The Terrapins remain unbeaten, at 10-0, and extend their win streak to 12 in a row against the Dukes, who fall to 7-3 on the year. The 13-goal margin was the widest in the 45-game history of the series. "We just didn't have enough toughness on the attack today," Head Coach Shelley Klaes-Bawcombe said. "We shot 20 percent and when you're playing a great team like Maryland, that's just turning the ball over and giving it back, and they did a great job capitalizing. Give credit to Maryland, they played a great game of lacrosse today. We have to take a look at our offense and keep pushing them as we move forward." Three Maryland players recorded hat tricks, led by Jen Giles, who scored a game-high four goals with two assists. Kali Hartshorn provided three goals, three assists and seven draw controls, and Grace Griffin scored three times. Nine different Terrapins recorded at least one goal in the win. Lizzie Colson also won eight draw controls with a pair of caused turnovers. The Dukes had three players tally at least two points, as junior attacker Maddie McDaniel and sophomore midfielder Daria Lucchesi each scored twice. Junior midfielder Halle Duenkel led the team with three points off a goal and a career-high two assists. Defensively, senior Caroline Sdanowich turned in another solid showing with three caused turnovers, four draw controls and five ground balls, which matched her career high. McDaniel tied Sdanowich with four draws. Junior Emma Johnson also caused two turnovers, and redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Molly Dougherty had eight saves and tied her career best with four ground balls. Maryland opened the game scoring five of six in the first 12-and-a-half minutes. Leading 6-3, the Terps extended the lead to 9-3 at the break with three straight over the final 7:12. JMU scored in the opening minute of the second half and held Maryland without a goal for nearly 12 minutes, but the Terrapins notched nine of the game's final 10 goals to activate the running clock. INSIDE THE BOX SCORE Maryland out-shot JMU 34-21, including a 26-15 ledger in shots on goal. The Terrapins held a 15-10 advantage in draw controls, while the Dukes had a 19-15 edge in ground balls. The teams each had 12 turnovers, with both squads causing six of them. Maryland converted 4-of-6 free-position shots, and JMU was 0-of-5. The Terps also scored four goals while a player up from JMU yellow cards. BIG-TIME CROWD Sunday's attendance for the top-10 matchup between the Dukes and Terrapins brought 804 spectators to Sentara Park. That is the second-highest attendance for a lacrosse game at the complex, trailing the 861 that JMU drew for the 2018 NCAA Second Round game against Virginia last May. UP NEXT JMU returns to action next Saturday, March 30 when it hosts San Diego State. The opening draw is set for 5 p.m. at Sentara Park and wraps the five-game homestand ahead of the start of conference play.
