WASHINGTON – The No. 24 Georgetown University women's lacrosse squad could not stop a second half comeback as the Hoyas fell 17-8 to the No. 2 University of Maryland Terrapins (16-0) on Wednesday evening at Cooper Field in the Hoyas' nonconference finale. With the loss, Georgetown falls to 8-7 on the season with two games remaining. Junior attacker Michaela Bruno (Garden City, N.Y. / Garden City) led the way with two goals, while senior attacker Taylor Gebhardt (Baldwinsville, N.Y. / C.W. Baker) and junior attacker Emily Ehle (Baldwinsville, N.Y. / Christian Brothers Academy) managed a goal and two assists apiece. Senior midfielder Francesca Whitehurst (Baltimore, Md. / Roland Park Country School) rounded out those with multiple points tallying a goal and an assist in the contest. Georgetown was outshot 32-21, and the defense forced 14 Terp turnovers while giving up 18 of its own. On the draw, GU pulled in six draw controls to UM's 21. Senior goalkeeper Haelle Chomo (Naples, Fla. / Barron Collier) notched seven saves in the contest. Georgetown started the game strong as Bruno opened the scoring with an unassisted tally curling around the left side of the cage at 28:23. Senior attacker Morgan Ryan (Maplewood, N.J. / Oak Knoll School) added another two minutes later with the assist from Ehle. Maryland answered with a goal, but GU answered with back-to-back scores. Gebhardt buried a free position into the back of the net. This was followed by a goal from junior midfielder Liza Liotta (Baltimore, Md. / St. Paul's School for Girls) as Ehle tallied her second assist on the game. The Terps came back with a pair of goals, but Bruno notched her second of the evening going low on keeper Megan Taylor to make it 5-3 with 15:06 left to play. Following almost 10 scoreless minutes, the Terps pulled within one on a goal from leading scorer Jen Giles. The Hoyas answered with a 3-0 run sparked by a goal from Whitehurst and followed by a score from Ehle. Gebhardt was in on both plays with the assists. With 26 seconds left in the half, freshman attacker Ali Diamond (Lafayette Hill, Pa. / Plymouth-Whitemarsh) crossed in front of the cage taking the pass from Whitehurst to make it 8-4 at the break. Maryland struck first in the second half and never looked back scoring 13 unanswered goals. Georgetown would not find a way to comeback eventually falling 17-8. The Hoyas will close out the home schedule on Saturday as the squad hosts Old Dominion University in a BIG EAST Conference matchup at Cooper Field. The opening draw is scheduled for 1 p.m. Live stats and a webcast ($) featuring Monika Moore will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
