BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech lacrosse team welcomed top-ranked Boston College, the fourth consecutive top-five opponent to Thompson Field Saturday for the program's Senior Day, where six student-athletes; Julia Byrne, Emily Wilson, Molly Wentz, Kelci O'Donnell, Mary Claire Byrne and Emma Harden were honored in a pregame ceremony. On the field, the Eagles scored the game's first two goals from Tewaaraton nominees Sam Apuzzo and Dempsey Arsenault and Boston College would go on to earn a 16-13 victory. With the win, the Eagles move to 15-0 on the season (6-0). Tech once again found itself in a hole early with those two goals before Taylor Caskey found the net in a woman-up situation to ignite a 4-1 run that have the Hokies their first lead at 16:59 with Paige Petty's goal. From there, Boston College took control with a 6-1 run to head into the locker room with a 9-6 advantage. Tech trailed by as many as eight in the second frame, before coming back with the final five goals of the day including two from Harden on her final appearance in Blacksburg. Mary Claire Byrne grabbed five ground balls and caused three turnovers in midfield. She also scored once. Petty scored six points (five goals, one assist) and corralled eight draw controls. Caskey added a hat trick and Julia Bolte scored three points on the day. Morgan Berman made four saves and gathered three ground balls. Tech now stands at 8-8 and 1-5 in the ACC ahead of next week's game at the University of Virginia. For Boston College Sam Apuzzo lead the Eagles with six points (3 goals, 3 assists). Kenzie Kent added five points (3 goals, 2 assists). Dempsey Arsenault and Cara Urbank each tallied hat tricks Inside the box score The Eagles led on the draw circle 19-12 Tech was quicker to the loose ball all afternoon, leading 22-14 in ground balls Both teams committed 16 turnovers The Hokies ended the game with more shots on goal, 22-20 Quoting Coach Sung You know our schedule has been so tough and we've had these tight games. We have been so close to these top-five teams but haven't been able to put it all together and get over the hump. We came back and had the last five goals of the game which shows that we can play, but again we were in a bit of a hole. We knew their best players would score (Apuzzo and Kent), but we did a decent job of defending them I thought. I though Paige Petty played well today, scoring six points for us in the midfield. What's next The Hokies will close the regular season on Saturday, April 20 at Virginia. First draw in Charlottesville is set for noon. The ACC tournament, held at Boston College's Alumni Stadium will take place April 24-28.
