DURHAM, N.H. – The University of New Hampshire women's lacrosse team edged Binghamton University in a back-and-forth battle on Saturday. Elizabeth Blanding (Pittsford, N.Y.) recorded a career-high four points to lead the Wildcats to the 12-10 victory at Wildcat Stadium. Wildcats' goalie Issy Torres (Elmhurst, Ill.) recorded nine saves on the day with six of them coming in the second half. Three other Wildcats – Rylee Leonard (Conventry, R.I.), Teagan Northrup (Longmeadow, Mass.) and Catherine Sexton (Niskayuna, N.Y.) – had multiple point games. Leonard tallied two goals and one assist, Northrup netted two goals and Miller recorded one of each. Caroline Hernon (Hampton, N.H.) had a team- and career-high ground balls with seven and also grabbed four draw controls. Hernon added a goal and caused a turnover. Binghamton was led offensively by Amelia Biancardi (3g) and Olivia Batista (2g, 1a). Taylor Passuello stopped 11 shots. In a game that saw eight ties and four lead changes, UNH prevailed to improve to 6-3 overall and 1-0 in America East while Binghamton is 0-9, 0-1. UP NEXT UNH ends its three-game homestand March 30 against University of Hartford at Wildcat Stadium. Game time is 1 p.m. FIRST HALF UNH got on the board first at 29:16 on a goal from Leonard on a free-position shot. Binghamton struck back at 23:09 on a goal from Batista to tie the game. UNH went back-to-back at 21:40 on a goal from Julia Neyland (Boxborough, Mass.) and 20:22 on a goal from Blanding to take a 3-1 lead. The Bearcats answered at 15:11 on a free-position goal from Alissa Franze and then again at 13:36 on a goal from Biancardi on a great pass from behind cage to the crease for the finish to tie the game at 3-3. Less than two minutes later – at 11:40 – UNH scored on a goal by Devan Miller (Bristol, R.I.). Miller made a great move across the crease to give the Wildcats a 4-3 lead. Two goals by Binghamton in a two-minute span gave them a 5-4 lead with 7:45 left in the first half. UNH struck back a minute later on a goal from Leonard, whose shot from the left side painted the top left corner for the goal to tie the game 5-5 at 6:36. After a great save from UNH's Torres to keep the game tied, the Wildcats scored at 3:28 on Blanding's second goal of the game, as she scooped up a loose ball in front of the cage before finishing to give UNH a 6-5 advantage. Binghamton tied it up, 6-6, with 30.6 seconds on the clock with a goal from Alyssa Sanchez on a free position shot. UNH scored with five seconds remaining in the half on a goal from Blanding (3rd of game) to regain the lead, 7-6, going into the locker room. SECOND HALF UNH opened the scoring in the second half at 26:03 on a goal from Mickenzie Larivee (Amherst, N.H.). She came from behind the cage and made a nice spin move to the inside on the crease to finish and give UNH a two-goal advantage, 8-6. The Bearcats rattled off the next three goals within two minutes to take a 9-8 lead on tallies by Batista, Emily Masera and Biancardi. UNH responded at 18:44 on a goal from Sexton on a fantastic around the back shot in front of the cage and then again at 16:36 on a goal by Northrup to regain the lead, 10-9. Binghamton tied it up at 10 at 14:25 on a free-position goal by Rebecca Golderman. UNH closed out the game with a goal at 12:58 from Northrup and then again at 8:33 on a goal from Hernon to take the lead and the win, 12-10. UNH NOTEBOOK This is UNH's best start through nine games since the 2010 squad was also 6-3. Sexton finished with a goal and assist to keep her nine-game goal streak alive. Miller extended her point streak to nine games with a goal in the first half. Leonard has now scored in eight consecutive games. Northrup's goal streak was extended to five games and point streak to eight. INSIDE THE NUMBERS UNH improved to 2-1 at home in 2019. The Wildcats led the ground ball battle, 20-8, and had a slight edge in both shots (31-28) and turnovers (11-13). UNH had a successful day on clear attempts, going 12-13, and the draw controls were 12-12. SERIES NOTEBOOK UNH now has a 17-1 lifetime record against Binghamton and that includes a perfect 10-0 in Durham. UNH avenges a 13-7 loss at Binghamton on April 28 last year.
