Brett Tenaglia set three career-highs on Friday evening as the Furman men's lacrosse team fell to the No. 3 North Carolina Tar Heels in non-conference play from Paladin Stadium. Furman falls to 1-5 on the season while North Carolina improves to 6-0 overall. "I thought we did a good job of hanging in there with them in the first half," said head coach Richie Meade. "It was disappointing that they came out in the third quarter and scored three goals. I thought our kids played hard. We were competitive." Tenaglia led the Paladins offensively with career-highs in points (5), goals (3) and assists (2). Anders Erickson, Tucker Brown and Jack Dowd all scored two goals. Chad Kreuzer and Carson Sorrells each contributed one goal. Austin Leonard, Jarrett Birch, Keegan Pearl and Will Farrell dished out one assist apiece. Corey Hall picked up six ground balls while eight different players caused one turnover. In goal, Alec Van de Bovenkamp made 14 saves. Chris Gray and Tanner Cook both paced the Tar Heels on offense with nine and seven points, respectively. Gray compiled five goals and four assists while Cook added six goals and one assist. Gray also had five ground balls. Zac Tucci led all players with a game-high nine ground balls. Brian Cameron and Will Bowen both caused two turnovers. Caton Johnson registered six saves in goal. North Carolina recorded the game's first three goals and took a 3-0 lead with 8:40 left in the second quarter. Furman would outscore the Tar Heels 3-1 over the final eight minutes of the first half beginning with Tenaglia's first goal of the game at the 7:53 mark to trim the lead down to 3-1. After North Carolina responded with a goal, Tenaglia and Brown teamed up for back-to-back goals during a 1:20 stretch to send the Paladins into halftime trailing 4-3. Cook recorded three of his game-high six goals in the first 1:53 of the third quarter to give the Tar Heels a 7-3 advantage. Furman then held North Carolina scoreless over nearly seven minutes as it cut its deficit down to 7-5 with 7:46 left after goals by Sorrells and Tenaglia. Cook added two more goals to give the Tar Heels a 9-5 lead with 3:10 to go. Dowd scored with one second remaining on the clock to make the score 9-6 heading to the fourth quarter. North Carolina began the final period on a 5-0 run and increased its lead out to 14-6 with 11:30 remaining in the contest. The Tar Heels outscored the Paladins 9-1 over a stretch of 12:11 in the quarter. After Kreuzer recorded a goal at the 9:37 mark, North Carolina picked up four straight goals to lead 18-7. Furman closed out the game by scoring four goals over the final 2:48. Erickson scored twice while Brown and Dowd each collected one goal. Erickson's goal with 42 seconds remaining put the final score at 18-11. The Paladins concluded the game with 22 shots and 20 ground balls. Furman forced the Tar Heels into 17 turnovers and held a 14-6 advantage in saves. The Paladins are back at home on Tuesday, March 10 to host second-ranked Penn State at 7 p.m.
