The University of Richmond men's lacrosse team opened the 2020 season and was looking to make a statement to start the season, but the Spiders suffered a 14-13 double overtime loss to No. 4 Maryland Saturday afternoon in front of a crowd of 2,089 fans at Robins Stadium. Maryland out-scored the Spiders 6-2 in the fourth quarter to force extra time and the Terrapins got the game-winning goal after 5:48 of tense scoreless play in overtime had expired to improve to 2-0 on the season. Junior midfielder Mitch Savoca (Newtown, Conn.) and freshman attack Richie Connell (Evergreen, Colo.) led the way offensively with three goals apiece. Savoca scored the first two goals of the game on his way to a season-opening hat trick while Connell had a stellar freshman debut scoring three goals in the first half off of the bench. Connell added an assist in the second half to finish with four points in his collegiate debut. Defensively, senior Sean Menges (Richmond, Va.) led the charge with six caused turnovers while adding six ground balls. The six caused turnovers are a career-high for Menges and tied for third-most in a single game in program history. Junior Brett Reid (Clinton, Conn.) added a career-high 10 ground balls, helping the Spiders record 40 ground balls in the loss. The 10 ground balls by Reid is the third-most in a single game by a player in program history while the 40 team ground balls are tied for seventh most in a single game.
