No. 17/19 Ohio State edged the No. 20/RV Bucknell men's lacrosse team, 15-11, on Saturday at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. The Buckeyes (3-1, 0-0 B1G) handed the Bison (3-1, 0-0 PL) their first loss of the 2020 campaign behind an eight-point outing by Jack Myers. For Bucknell, Tommy Sopko registered five points (4g-1a) while Reid Delanois filled the score sheet with team-best totals of caused turnovers (3) and ground balls (4). After Ohio State opened the scoring five seconds into the game, the Bison responded with four unanswered goals. During that run, which ran between the first quarter's 14:24 and 7:07 marks, Sopko and Alston Tarry each struck twice. The Buckeyes roared back into the game, scoring eight unanswered goals to build a 9-4 advantage with 3:43 on the clock in the second quarter. Senior long-stick midfielder Hunter Newman's first collegiate goal halted the Ohio State run; in transition, Newman took a feed from Nick Clarke and found the back of the net to cut Bucknell's deficit to 9-5 going into halftime. The Bison came out of the break hot, scoring the second half's first two goals to draw within two. Newman sparked the second goal, picking off a pass and then sending Clarke ahead; Clarke found Will Yorke at the side of the net for a point-blank goal. The Buckeyes proceeded to hold Bucknell without a goal between the third quarter's 12:47 and 3:13 marks, netting two goals of their own to go up by an 11-7 margin. The Bison again drew back within two behind Sopko's fourth goal of the game and a highlight-reel, over-the-shoulder bid by Will Yorke. Less than a minute after Yorke's strike, Myers completed his hat trick to give Ohio State a 12-9 lead with 10:49 remaining in regulation. A Harry Wellford tally again pulled Bucknell back within two at the fourth quarter's 9:34 mark; the Buckeyes responded with a 3-0 run that effectively put the game out of reach. Beyond Sopko, Yorke (3g), Clarke (3a) and Tarry (2g) had multi-point outings. Ben Clark made 11 saves, none more impressive than his denial of Myers from point-blank range late in the fourth quarter. For Ohio State, Reid Jackson (3g-1a) and Tre LeClaire (4g) also had four-point outings. Josh Kirson made 13 saves in net to earn the win. As expected when ranked teams meet, the Bison and Buckeyes were evenly matched. Bucknell led in shots (37-33) and ground balls (34-32) while Ohio State led in shots on goal (26-24) and faceoffs (15-14). Notably, the Buckeyes held the Bison scoreless on four man advantages and held them to 14-of-21 on clearing attempts. They also won six of seven faceoffs during the second quarter, outscoring Bucknell by a 6-1 margin in that frame. This was Bucknell and Ohio State's first meeting in Lewisburg since 2010. This was the third time both the Buckeyes and Bison were ranked at the time of their game; both teams were ranked in 2007 (Bucknell 17th, Ohio State 19th) and 2008 (Bucknell 19th, Ohio State 20th). The Bison next travel to Binghamton (Feb. 25 at 4 p.m.) before hosting Marist (Feb. 29 at 12 p.m.).
