The No. 6/8 University of Pennsylvania men's lacrosse team had an epic battle with No. 2/2 Penn State on Saturday afternoon at Franklin Field, the Nittany Lions scoring 1:12 into overtime to escape Philadelphia with an 18-17 victory. With the loss, Penn fell to 1-2 overall with all three games coming against top-10 opponents. PSU is now 4-1 on the young season. Notes *Senior Adam Goldner recorded his 100th career goal. He becomes the sixth player in program history to score 100 goals. With his second-quarter goal, he extended both his goal- and point-scoring streaks to 28 games dating back to the 2018 season. *Junior Sean Lulley had a career-high eight points (2g/6a) for the Quakers. His six assists were also a career-high. He set a new career-best in points for the third game in a row. *Penn was 17 of 19 in clear attempts. *Dylan Gergar set new career-highs in both goals (5) and points (6) on Saturday. He has nine goals and four assists through the team's first three games this season. * Jack Schultz had three goals and Drew Robshaw chipped in two markers of his own. * Senior Defender Kyle Thornton scored his first collegiate goal in the game. *Senior FOGO Kyle Gallagher won 26 of 39 faceoffs and collected 14 ground balls. His 26 faceoff wins were a career-high and he registered 14 or more ground balls for the third game in a row. *Sophomore goalkeeper Patrick Burkinshaw made a season-high 11 saves for the Quakers. How It Happened Penn State jumped out quickly, Jack Kelly and Jack Traynor scoring in the first 1:11 of the game and forcing Quakers head coach Mike Murphy to take a timeout. Dylan Gergar quickly got one of those goals back on Penn's opening possession, and then Keyveat Postell tied it up with a nice individual effort in front. Sean Lulley put the Red and Blue in front, converting a pass from Matt McILwrick on the doorstep, and then Kaleb Fernandez rifled home a feed from James Shipley to make Penn's lead 4-2. PSU's Cole Willard snapped the Quakers' four-goal run with a nice low-to-high goal from about 10 yards out, and then Kelly tied things up with a cheeky between-the-legs rebound shot after Patrick Burkinshaw saved the Lions' initial effort. Penn's next possession ended with a PSU caused turnover, and the Lions turned that into a transition goal with Mac O'Keefe cutting backdoor and completing the fast-break pass from Sam Sweeney. The three-goal run left Penn State up after one, 5-4. The run continued early into the second, PSU taking advantage of a turnover to make it 6-4 on a Traynor tally and 7-4 on a nice individual effort by Grant Ament. Gergar ended the five-goal run on a broken play, leaving his man and firing a right-handed shot past PSU goalie Colby Kneese. The Quakers then got within a goal on Adam Goldner's rocket shot off transition—the senior's 100th career goal—but Ament set a two-goal margin at halftime (8-6) when he converted a rebound late in the second quarter. Gergar opened the third-quarter scoring to get Penn back within a goal, but PSU went back up by two when its tic-tac-toe passing left Dylan Foulds alone in front for the easy conversion. The Quakers again made it a one-goal game when Sean Lulley lost his footing, got back up and found Jack Schultz who finished in front. Just 31 seconds later, senior defenseman Kyle Thornton bobbed and weaved through a phalanx of defenders, found a seam, and converted a bounce shot to tie things up, and then 1:15 after that Penn went in front when Lulley caught a rebound and one-timed a pass to Schultz, who turned around and went low-to-high. Traynor took a feed from Ament to tie things up for PSU, but Lulley made it 11-10 Penn after three when he converted a rebound with just seven seconds left in the period. PSU tied it at 11-11 when the long pole Nick Cardile scored his second of the season, and then TJ Malone scored a pair of goals 39 seconds apart—one from the right, the other from the left—to push the Nittany Lions in front 13-11. Gergar got one of those goals back, Lulley finding the sophomore cutting in front for his fourth of the day, and then Drew Robshaw knotted the score at 13-13 with a lefty shot past Kneese's left side with 8:15 left. The teams were just getting started. Penn State went back in front when O'Keefe beat a screened Burkinshaw from distance, and then after a Penn face-off win quickly became a turnover the Nittany Lions turned the ensuing transition into an easy goal as Foulds made it 15-13. A James Shipley goal was matched by O'Keefe, and then a Robshaw tally was equaled by Traynor and it was 17-15 with 2:20 left. Penn State's Traynor was called for a non-releasable unsportsmanlike penalty with 1:12 left when he speared a Penn defender, and the Quakers took advantage. Schultz scored on the doorstep first, taking a nice no-look pass from Lulley, and then Gergar knotted things at 17-17 with 16 seconds left. In all, it was a 13-goal period between the teams and the stage was set for overtime. Penn State won the faceoff to start the extra period, but it looked like Penn would get an offensive chance when Burkinshaw stopped a fallaway effort by Kelly. However, Burkinshaw's outlet pass became a 50-50 ball and Kelly won the footrace. In the transition scramble, he found O'Keefe on the right and O'Keefe went low to beat Burkinshaw and end it. Up Next Penn will join Villanova, Saint Joseph's and Drexel for the Philly 4 Lacrosse Classic next Friday (at Penn) and Sunday (at Saint Joseph's). The Quakers face the Wildcats at Franklin Field on Friday at 7:30 p.m., following the Drexel-Saint Joseph's game which starts at 5 p.m. On Sunday, Penn heads to Hawk Hill and a true road game with the Hawks at 2:30 p.m., following the Villanova-Drexel clash at noon.
