Florida Southern College men's lacrosse picked up a significant victory over No. 13 Mount Olive on Sunday afternoon at Moccasin Field. The Mocs (3-3) used five straight goals in the second quarter to take control of the game over the Trojans (4-2). Freshman attack Thomas Frank led the game with seven points as he scored four goals and tallied three assists. Sophomore goalie Maxwell Freestone made 10 saves on 40 total shots in the victory. Junior Kevin Horwitz dominated the face-offs for the second straight game as he won 23 of the 27 face-offs. HOW IT HAPPENED 1st Quarter | Frank put home his first goal of the game at the 13:29 mark of the first quarter to give the home team an early 1-0 lead. Southern would concede the next three goals to give Mount Olive a 3-1 lead at the end of the first quarter. 2nd Quarter | The second quarter was huge for the Mocs as they would score five goals in the quarter. Franked opened the scoring to pull the Mocs within one as he took a feed from sophomore attack Jeff Atlas. Just 30 seconds later senior Kevin Dyer would tie the game at 3-3. Frank continued to best the Trojans defense as he sent a shot blazing past the Mount Olive goalie to give the home team its second lead of the day. After another Dyer goal, Atlas took the pass from Frank and completed a 5-0 run for the Mocs. UMO would tack on a goal in the closing seconds of the first half. FSC would take a 6-4 lead into the halftime break. 3rd Quarter | Coming out of the break, the Mocs would get three straight goals from three different players. Sophomore Sean Nolan, sophomore Lucas Sommers, and Frank all found the back of the net. Atlas would assist Nolan Frank. Frank would tally the assist on Sommers' goal. Over the final five minutes of the third quarter, the teams would trade goals as the Mocs got a man-up goal from Atlas and a man down goal from junior Edward May. Mount Olive would capitalize on a man-up chance of their own. Florida Southern would lead 11-6 after three-quarters of play. 4th Quarter | Mount Olive would open the fourth quarter with a goal to cut the Mocs lead to four. However, Nolan would respond with a man-up goal, his second goal of the game, to put the Mocs lead back to five. The Trojans would out scorer the Mocs 3-1 over the final seven minutes of the game, including a goal with 24 seconds remaining. Southern would take this one with a final of 13-10. INSIDE THE NUMBERS The Mocs fired off 45 shots, 25 of which were on goal. Mount Olive recorded 40 total shots, 25 of which were on goal. Each team was called for 10 total penalties. The Mocs were penalized for seven minutes, while UMO was penalized for eight minutes. Southern also had a dominant edge in groundballs, 50-29, including a game-high 16 for Horwitz. Frank led all scorers with four goals, Dyer added three more as Nolan and Atlas each added two. Atlas and Frank had three assists each and Dyer tallied the other assist. UP NEXT The Mocs will make a trip north to visit Homewood Field on the campus of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md. The Mocs will face Frostburg State for a neutral site game on March 12.
