Lax.com Rising HS Games of the Week – June 5, 2017 By 3d Rising Staff   As the season officially winds down in a few states with teams still fighting for state titles, the final the Lax.com Rising HS Games of the Week of the year – consider it a “championships edition” – looks at a few of the key games in what should be an outstanding showcase of talent to end the year in places like New York and Massachusetts.   That includes numerous “new” matchups in the Empire State after a lot of shuffling due to changes in classifications. Follow Lax.com on Twitter (@laxdotcom) and Instagram (@laxdotcom) for great content all throughout the year too.   New York State Championships, June 10 Held at St. John Fisher College, the New York State championships feature the best in Class A, Class B, Class C and – an addition due to this year’s shuffling – Class D.   In Class A, Ward Melville (N.Y.) faces off against Lakeland-Panas (N.Y.) in one semifinal while Baldwinsville (N.Y.) meets Pittsford (N.Y.) in the other half of the bracket. Ward Melville could be considered the favorite as the No. 2 team in the Rising Downstate Top 10 this week. Pittsford is the No. 3 team in the Upstate rankings. Ward Melville defeated Lakeland-Panas in the state semifinals last season, 16-6. Pittsford and Baldwinsville have not met in at least the last 10 years, making the matchup all the more interesting.     In Class B, last year’s Class A champion Victor (N.Y.) takes on Vestal (N.Y.) in one semifinal game. Yorktown (N.Y.) and Garden City (N.Y.) meet in the other game. Victor moved to Class B after New York reworked the classifications and created the Class D this season. The Blue Devils had their 50-game winning streak snapped this season, but they have won six-straight games and are the No. 2 team in the 3d Rising State-by-State New York-Upstate Top 10. Yorktown is the No. 3 team in the Downstate Top 10 with Garden City recently entering the rankings at No. 10. Garden City has won seven-straight games while Yorktown is riding a five-game streak. The Cornhuskers made it to the semifinals after a 12-11 win over a talented Niskayuna (N.Y.) team. Garden City got here with a 14-4 win over Eastport-South Manor (N.Y.), a dominant showing with well-executed offense.     In Class C, Cold Spring Harbor (N.Y.) takes on Pleasantville (N.Y.) in one half of the bracket. The Seahawks have won the last two Class C championships and are the heavy favorite to three-peat. Arguably the best team in New York and the highest-ranked in the USA Today Super 25, Cold Spring Harbor brings a 17-game winning streak into the semifinals. These teams met in the semifinals last season and Cold Spring Harbor 12-10. Jamesville DeWitt (N.Y.), the No. 1 team in the Upstate Top 10 and meets Palmyra-Macedon (N.Y.) in the other half of the semis. The Red Rams moved into Class C for the first time this season after winning the Class B title last year. They’re riding a 17-game winning streak and are led by Ryan Archer (Hobart) who leads the team with 136 points.  

  In Class D, whichever teams wins will be the first Class D champion in state history. Westlake (N.Y.) meets Babylon (N.Y.) on June 7 at 6:30 p.m. In the other semifinal, Christian Brothers (N.Y.) faces off against Akron (N.Y.). Christian Brothers is the No. 10 team in the Upstate rankings and could very well be the favorite to take home the first “small school” title in the Empire State.   Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Assoc. Boys Lacrosse North Division 1, June 7 Lincoln-Sudbury (Mass.) could be considered the favorite to win it all in Massachusetts this season. The Warriors have been the No. 1 team in the Rising Massachusetts Top 10 all season and their only loss was 7-5 to Summit (N.J.) on April. 29. Head Coach Brian Vona and the Warriors have not lost a game to an in-state team since 2014. They took down Billerica (Mass.) 19-6 on June 3. Before those chickens are counted though, Lincoln-Sudbury has to get through Reading (Mass.) in one half of the semifinals on June 7. In the other half of the North Division 1 semifinals, Waltham (Mass.) takes on Acton-Boxboro (Mass.). These teams met on May 2 with Acton winning 16-10. That was the last loss for Waltham as they have rolled off 10-straight wins, including a 10-9 win over Andover (Mass.) in the quarterfinals.   Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference Championships, June 10 Darien is the favorite to win it all this year and for good reason. The Blue Wave is riding a 52-game winning streak, which is the longest streak in state history. They are led by Kevin Lindley (Loyola) and Logan McGovern (Bryant) on offense and anchored by goalie Ryan Cornell (Vermont) in goal this season. But before defending its Class L championship, Darien has to get through Ridgefield (Conn.) in the state semifinals on June 7. Darien defeated Ridgefield 20-4 in the FCIAC championship game on May 25 and won 10-3 on May 6. These teams met in the Class L semifinals last year and Darien won 10-6.
