Stephen Rehfuss moved into 10th all time in assists at Syracuse and Drake Porter posted the most saves by an SU goalie since 2007, as Syracuse beat Vermont 17-13 on Saturday to move to 2-1 on the season. Rehfuss had a career day quarterbacking the Orange offense, scoring twice and adding six assists. His eight points tied a career high set in the 2020 season opener vs. Colgate. He now has 90 career assists, passing Dylan Donahue (84), Paul Gait (85), Tom Nelson (85), Liam Banks (86) and JoJo Marasco (87) on the day. Porter stopped 20 shots from the Catamounts, the most in a game since Peter Coluccini made 22 against Cornell in 2007. "I thought it was a very competitive game today," said head coach John Desko. "I think Vermont came to play and what they did on faceoffs just gave them so many possessions. We knew they could score goals on offense, but thankfully we were efficient on our offense scoring 17 goals on 32 shots." "I wish we could have gotten a few more faceoffs, I think we could have put a few more on the scoreboards, but credit to their faceoff man. I think on the defensive end of the field, Drake Porter really helped our cause. He was tested today and he rose to the occasion." The game was the first event at Syracuse in more than a calendar year that had fans, as a limited number of students were welcomed back to the Dome on Saturday. Nine different players registered a point, with eight different players scoring in a balanced day offensively for 'Cuse. In addition to Rehfuss, freshman Owen Hiltz had his second-straight five point day, while Chase Scanlan got going with a hat trick. Tucker Dordevic, Lucas Quinn and Jamie Trimboli also scored twice each. The Orange struggled at the faceoff X, with Vermont winning 24-of-34 restarts and the extra possessions led to the Catamounts out-shooting 'Cuse 51-32. The Orange put 29 of their total 32 shots on cage and scored 17 goals in an efficient offense. Syracuse scored the game's first two goals, with Dordevic and Hiltz each finding the back of the net in the first-five minutes of regulation. Thomas McConvey and Brock Haley answered back within a minute to even the game at two. Jamie Trimboli then scored the next two goals and Syracuse never trailed the rest of the way. Rehfuss capped the first quarter with his first goal of the day to lead 5-3 after one. The Orange and Catamounts traded goals to open the second, then a three-goal run on goals from Quinn, Owen Seebold and Rehfuss broke things open, sending Syracuse to the locker room with a 10-7 advantage. At one point in the third, Syracuse led by as much as six (18-14), but the teams traded goals until the finish giving the final result. Vermont out-gained the Orange on ground balls 42-29 and performed better on clears (20-of-22) compared to Syracuse's 23-of-28. Next, Syracuse will face Stony Brook on Friday at 1 p.m.
