CHAPEL HILL—Nine North Carolina players scored goals, including four with at least three goals apiece, as the second-ranked University of North Carolina women's lacrosse team beat Mercer, 20-7, on Friday evening at Dorrance Field. Sam Geiersbach posted her second consecutive huge game for the Tar Heels. Days after being named ACC Offensive Player of the Week for posting five goals and an assist in the March 6 win over Northwestern, Geiersbach tallied two goals and six assists for a game-high eight points. Her six assists and eight points both were season highs. Jamie Ortega had four goals, two assists and two caused turnovers for Carolina. Caitlyn Wurzburger scored three times and tied her season high with four assists. Andie Aldave scored three times and added an assist and Ally Mastorianni had three goals with eight draw controls. Scottie Rose Growney had two goals, one assist, two ground balls and a caused turnover. Livi Lawton and Melissa Sconone also scored single goals. Fourteen of Carolina's 20 goals were assisted overall. Playing without Emma Trenchard on the defensive unit due to an ankle injury, Emily Nalls led the defensive effort with six draw controls and a team-high two caused turnovers. Taylor Moreno (7-0) started her 61st consecutive game and played the first three quarters in goal for Carolina, making three saves, allowing six goals and gathering a ground ball. Freshman Alecia Nicholas played the final period in the cage for UNC, allowing a goal and making a save. Carolina took control of the game from the outset, leading by an 8-1 score after the first period and 13-4 at halftime. UNC out-shot Mercer, 30-13 and won 23 of 31 draws on the day. Mastroianni had eight draw controls, Ella Little had seven off the bench and Nalls had six. The Tar Heels will host Louisville on Sunday at 1 p.m. in their next outing.
