CHAPEL HILL—Six Tar Heels scored multiple goals as the second-ranked University of North Carolina women's lacrosse team dominated sixth-ranked Northwestern, 20-9, on a warm Sunday afternoon at Dorrance Field. Carolina's offense was at its best in the second and fourth quarters, outscoring the Wildcats by a 6-1 margin in the second and a 9-3 margin in the fourth period. UNC blitzed Northwestern, 12-5, in the second half. UNC beat the Wildcats for the eighth consecutive time and the 10th time in the last 11 meetings in the series. Graduate transfer Sam Geiersbach (Richmond) scored a season-high five goals on just seven shots and added an assist for a season-high six points for Carolina. Graduate midfielder Ally Mastroianni, the 2021 Atlantic Coast Conference Midfielder of the Year, tallied four goals, one assist and nine draw controls. She has 20 draw controls in the last three games. Senior Jamie Ortega, the 2021 ACC Attacker of the Year, finished with two goals and a game-high three assists. Scottie Rose Growney had two goals and two assists, Olivia Dirks had a hat trick with three goals, Andie Aldave scored twice and Caitlyn Wurzburger dished out two assists. Lauren Gilbert led Northwestern with four goals and one assist. Taylor Moreno was strong in the cage for the Tar Heels, going the distance to improve to 6-0 this season and 54-6 in her career. She made 11 saves and went the distance in goal. Northwestern started the game strong, leading 3-2 after the first quarter before Carolina stormed into the second period with a 6-0 scoring run that included two goals by Geiersbach and two by Dirks, turning a 3-2 deficit into an 8-3 lead in just over 12 minutes of second-period action. The Wildcats cut the lead to as few as three goals at 9-6 with 9:10 remaining in the third quarter, only to see Carolina rip off a 7-1 scoring run to push the lead to 16-7 with 9:49 left in the fourth. UNC's offense limited Northwestern's two goalies to just four combined saves in the game. The Tar Heels will host Mercer on Friday March 11 in their next outing. Notes: • Carolina won for the 33rd time in its last 34 games. • UNC improved to 12-11 all-time against Northwestern, beating the Wildcats for the eighth consecutive time and the 10th time in the last 11 meetings. • UNC scored double-figure goals for the 42nd time in its last 43 games. • Taylor Moreno improved her career record in goal to 54-6. She has started 60 consecutive games in the cage. • Jamie Ortega extended her goal streak to 40 consecutive games. • Ortega posted her 67th career multi-goal game. • Ortega has tallied at least one point in 69 consecutive games and 74 of 75 in her career. • Ortega extended her own school record for points by upping her total to 381. She is third in ACC history in career points. Sam Apuzzo of Boston College is second with 397. Jen Adams of Maryland (1998-2001) is first with 445. • Ally Mastroianni had nine draw controls and has 20 in her last three games.
