BOULDER – The University of Colorado lacrosse team received goals from 11 players in a 17-13 victory Sunday over UC Davis at the Indoor Practice Facility. After UC Davis opened with an early goal from Alex Agnew, the Buffaloes reeled off eight straight to take control of the game, as they led 8-1 with 11:41 remaining in the second quarter. The teams would trade goals the rest of the second quarter as the Buffaloes took a 12-4 halftime lead. They outshot UC Davis 26-10 in the first half, including a 16-8 advantage in shots on goal. "An exciting part, especially in the first half, is (that) we had a lot of (players) step up and play hard and play well offensively," head coach Ann Elliott Whidden said. UC Davis found their footing in the second half, as they went on a 6-1 run. The CU lead was cut down to 13-10 with 11:18 remaining in the game. "We let down a little bit in that third quarter," Whidden said. "We got a little tired. We got a little emotional and you can't do that. You give too much (energy) to the other team." The Buffaloes found a way to close out the game as they got two important goals in a 68 second span to retake a 15-10 lead. UC Davis would not get closer than four goals after that, as Colorado won its fifth straight game to start the season. "I'm proud of this team," Whidden said. "We found a way to win. We're 5-0 in non-conference. We're heading into conference (play) and nothing's going to get easier, so we've got to get better from this. Hopefully, we can watch some film and figure out the ways we need to get better." The Buffaloes improved to 5-0, which is their second best start to the season in program history. UC Davis is now 2-2 overall. WHAT HAPPENED: The Aggies took an early 1-0 lead on an Alex Agnew goal at the 14:05 mark. After the opening goal, the Buffaloes went on a 5-0 run, which included four goals by Charlie Rudy. Chloe Willard added a goal at the 7:10 mark to give the Buffs a 3-1 lead. Rudy scored her third at 6:36, giving the Buffs three goals in a 1:21 span to take a 4-1 lead. Her fourth came with 1:09 remaining in the quarter, as CU took a 5-1 lead into the second quarter. The Buffaloes continued their run of consecutive goals to start the second quarter, as Sam McGee, Morgan Pence and Willard scored in a 2:27 span. UC Davis called a timeout as CU took the 8-1 lead with 11:41 remaining in the quarter. UC Davis got a goal from Kendall Seifert at the 11:00 mark, which was answered by Katie Haley's first career goal at 8:58 to give the Buffaloes a 9-2 lead. The Aggies would answer with Seifert's second goal of the game to make the score 9-3. Colorado responded with goals from Jordan Johnson, who also tallied her first career marker, and Sydney Zimmerman 24 seconds apart as CU took an 11-3 lead. "Jordan and Katie are two players that they play hard, no matter the role that they're in," Whidden said. "I talked to them briefly on Friday and told them to be ready for today. They were more than ready, and I'm really proud of the way they played. I'm proud of a lot of the way (in which) the team played." UC Davis would get a man-up goal from Mia Lawrence with 1:59 remaining in the second quarter to get within seven goals at 11-4. Rudy answered with her fifth goal of the game to give the Buffaloes a 12-4 advantage with 49 seconds left and CU would take the eight-goal lead into halftime. The Aggies got a free-position goal from Grace Gebhardt to open the scoring in the second half with 13:05 remaining in the third quarter. Gebhardt would add a man-up goal at the 8:22 mark. Thirty seconds later, Agnew would score her second goal of the game, part of UC Davis' 3-0 run which cut CU's lead down to 12-7. After neither team tallied a goal for 5:45, Sadie Grozier scored her first goal of the game to give the Buffaloes a 13-7 advantage. The Aggies answered with a goal from Regan Arkless with 13 seconds left to cut the Buffalo lead to 13-8. Colorado took the five-goal advantage into the fourth quarter. UC Davis' would get goals 1:45 apart from Brooke Tokushige and Agnew to get within three goals of the Buffaloes at 13-10. CU answered with a free-position goal from Katie Giordano (14-10) with 10:17 remaining. Liz Phillips would score at the 9:09 mark to give the Buffaloes a 15-10 advantage, leading to a UC Davis timeout. The Aggies' Kendall Seifert scored her third goal of the contest with 7:05 remaining to cut the Colorado advantage to 15-11. It was shortly followed by Giordano scoring her second goal of the quarter at the 6:21 mark to reestablish CU's five-goal lead at 16-11. Kasey Braun tallied her second goal of the season at the 2:06 mark to give the Buffaloes a 17-11. The goal went in with six seconds remaining on the shot clock. The Aggies would answer with two late goals. Gebhardt scored her third goal of the game with 1:13 remaining. Brooke Long scored her first goal of the season 21 seconds later as CU led 17-13 with 52 seconds left. TOP STAT: Charlie Rudy led the Buffs with five goals, four of which came in the first quarter. She recorded her 21st career hat trick in the victory. NOTEWORTHY: The Buffaloes' 5-0 start is their second-best start in program history (11-0 in 2017). UP NEXT: The Buffaloes start Pac-12 play with a three-game road trip against USC (March 11), Arizona State (March 13), and Oregon (March 18). NOTABLE: Rudy now has 21 career games with three or more goals. Rudy scored her 13th career man-up goal with 6:36 remaining in the first quarter. She is one goal shy of tying Miranda Stinson for most man-up goals in CU history. Colorado went over 15 minutes without giving up a goal for the second consecutive game (17:49 vs. Vanderbilt, 18:05 vs. UC Davis). Colorado received seven goals from seven different players in the second quarter. Both Katie Haley and Jordan Johnson recorded their first career goals in the second quarter. Kasey Braun recorded her second consecutive game with a goal. Liz Phillips has three goals the last two games after going goalless through the first three games of the season. The Buffaloes are 4-1 at the IPF all-time and are 49-13 in Boulder. The Buffaloes are 6-0 against UC Davis all-time, which includes a 3-0 record in Boulder.
