– Centre men's lacrosse honored its seniors in a big way on Sunday afternoon, winning their fifth straight and improving to 7-1 overall with a 13-6 victory over the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels at Farris Stadium. GAME HIGHLIGHTS - Both teams got off to a slow start as goals were hard to come by in the first period. With 87 seconds left in the quarter, Nic Malubay broke through to put the Colonels on the board. More seniors got into the scoring column less than a minute later as Will Lathram scored off an assist from Chase Poplin to make it 2-0 Centre after one. - The floodgates opened for the Colonels in the second quarter. Jack Shannon opened the scoring 30 seconds into the period and the Colonels dominated from there, outscoring Oglethorpe 7-0 in the quarter. Will Hubbs had two goals for the Colonels in the second quarter, but the rest of the scoring belonged to the seniors as Malubay, Poplin, Anthony DiMichele and Drew Greenblatt all had goals during the stretch. - Leading 9-0 at halftime, the Colonels only scored once in the third period, but it came on a buzzer beater – the second in as many games for the Colonels – as Malubay put it into the cage with one second showing on the clock. - Mick Ginnity opened the scoring for Centre in the fourth quarter, with Malubay and Hubbs each scoring one more time to cap off the scoring output for the Colonels in the game. INSIDE THE BOX SCORE - Hubbs finished with three goals and two assists, but outside of his efforts and the goal by Ginnity to open the fourth quarter, the rest of the goals and assists for the Colonels on Senior Day belonged to the senior class, with Malubay posting a game high four goals. - The Colonels finished with a 43-19 advantage in ground balls, led by senior Jack Pharies with eight. Seniors Malubay, Shannon and Nolan Irey each finished with six ground balls. - Centre won 19 of 22 faceoffs in the contest, paced by Pharies, who won 16 of 18 to help Centre dominate possession throughout. NEXT UP Centre men's lacrosse will wrap up its 2021 regular season next week with a final road trip beginning with a game at Hendrix on Apr. 9.
