The Marietta College men's lacrosse team earned an 11-7 win over Muskingum University on Saturday (Feb. 27) in the season opener. With the win the Pioneers are 1-0 on the season, and with the loss the Fighting Muskies fall to 0-1 overall. "It was good to get out there and play someone else today. We have a lot we need to work on to get ready for next week, but it is nice to start off the season with a win over an OAC opponent," said Head Coach Shawn Runyon. Muskingum opened the scoring three minutes into the game with a goal. After five minutes of scoreless action, Marietta tied the game at 1-1 when Zach Radcliffe (Bethel Park, Pa. /Bethel Park) scored the first goal of his career. 40 seconds later the Pioneers took a 2-1 lead with a goal from Connor Ficke (Saint Leonard, Md./Calvert). The Marietta defense did not allow a goal for the final six minutes of play, and the Pioneers led, 2-1 at the end of the first. A minute and a half into the second quarter, Marietta grabbed a 3-1 edge behind a goal from Radcliffe off a feed from Jackson McGill (New Market, Md./Oakdale). The Pioneers defense of Jacob Morlando (White Bear Lake, Minn./Stillwater), Robby Guy (LaPlata, Md./St. Mary's Ryken), Zach Rush (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville Central), and Cullen Zaferopolos (Olmsted Falls, Ohio/Berea-Midpark) held the Fighting Muskies scoreless in the second quarter. Dane Barker (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day) made six first half saves, to put Marietta on top 3-1 at the intermission. Muskingum opened the third quarter scoring seven seconds in, to make the score 3-2 in favor of the Pioneers. Less than a minute later, Radcliffe scored his third goal of the game for Marietta. A minute later the Fighting Muskies scored, and the Pioneers led 4-3. After three minutes of scoreless action, Marietta rattled off six consecutive goals to lead 10-3, with just over two minutes to play in the third. The goals were scored by Chase Mullen (Cabot, Pa./Knoch), Quinn Rundgren (Angier, N.C./Fuquay Varina), Ficke, and Radcliffe. Muskingum scored the final goal of the quarter, but the Pioneers held a 10-4 edge to enter the final frame. Marietta scored four seconds into the fourth when Benjamin Hrovat (Jamestown, R.I./Bshop Hendricken) scored off a feed from Rundgren. The Fighting Muskies scored the final three goals of the game, but the Pioneers won, 11-7. Marietta was led by Ficke, he tied for a team high in goals with four, and picked up a pair of groundballs. Radcliffe tied for a team high in goals with four, and picked up a groundball. Rush led the defensive effort with three caused turnovers, and six groundballs. Barker played all 60 minutes in the goal, he faced 27 shots, 20 of which were on goal, and made 13 saves. Marietta will be back in action Saturday (March 6) when they travel to take on Capital University, with the game scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Fans can follow all of the Pioneer teams all year long at pioneers.marietta.edu.
