BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College men's lacrosse team (0-2) fell 10-4 to Oglethorpe University (3-2) on Friday evening at Ives-Lemel Family Field. The contest was the second of five-straight home matchups for the Tornados to kick off the 2022 season. Four different Tornados etched their names on the score sheet in Friday's contest, with Finnegan McCormack and Andrew McDonald both finding the back of the net for the second-straight week. Atticus Cooper scored his first-career goal, while Nate Stone found the back of the net for the first time in 2022. Trystan Wallace and McCormack each tallied assists, while McCormack went 8-for-17 on faceoffs and secured a game-high 11 ground balls. Devin McCarragher (0-2) got the start in goal for the Tornados, making 17 saves while Jack Hicks made his collegiate debut for Brevard and stopped a shot as well. The Stormy Petrels were led by Richard Bedgood IV, who scored four goals, and Max Brand who totaled three. Oglethorpe outshot Brevard 49-37, including a 30-11 advantage in the second half of play. Brevard won the ground ball battle, 59-41, while each team committed 30-plus turnovers. Oglethorpe won nine faceoffs to Brevard's eighth, and the Stormy Petrels committed 10 minutes worth of penalties to BC's two. Each side was able to convert a power-play opportunity. The visitors opened up the scoring, making a short handed goal at the 11:50 mark. Oglethorpe doubled their lead list 45 seconds later with an unassisted goal from Jazz Washington that made the score 2-0. After 10 minutes of scoreless action, McCormack scored his second goal of the season on a Wallace assist man-up to cut the deficit in half, 2-1, as the contest shifted to the second quarter. Cooper tied the game at the 11:46 mark in the second quarter, putting in a McDonald assist. The Stormy Petrels were able to hold Brevard's offense in check for the remainder of the half, while striking for three goals of their own to take a 5-2 lead into the halftime intermission. McDonald was able to cut the lead back to two goals, scoring just 23 seconds into the second half to make the score 5-3. Oglethorpe answered right back before Stone's first goal of the season made it a 6-4 affair with 8:45 left in the third period. The Stormy Petrels closed the third quarter with consecutive goals to make it a four-goal game, 8-4. The Stormy Petrels scored a goal 15 seconds into the fourth quarter on a power play before hitting a short-handed goal at the 10:28 mark, making the lead six for Oglethorpe, 10-4. The visitors were able to sit on their lead to close out the non-conference victory.
