DENVER – The [RV/20] University of Denver men's lacrosse team was able to cut a four-goal deficit to one twice, but [14/14] Yale earned a 16-13 road victory on Sunday Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium. Inside the Box Score: Ted Sullivan, Alex Simmons and Jack Hannah all finished with hat tricks, with the latter two finishing with four points by adding an assist. JJ Sillstrop led the team in points with five on the day, scoring twice and adding three assists, in addition to having a pair of goals wiped out for crease violations. Matt Brandau led things for Yale with eight points on five goals and three helpers. Alec Stathakis went 20-for-30 with 12 ground balls. On the defensive side, Adam Hangland had three caused turnovers and Malik Sparrow had two CTs and two ground balls. First Quarter: Sillstrop had a goal wiped out for being pushed into the inner crease with the goalie out of the cage to disallow the first of three goals for the Pioneers, and Yale responded with a goal on the other end to give the visitors the early lead. Yale got two goals on either side of Sullivan's 13th goal of the season to give the Bulldogs a three-goal advantage with 4:00 to play in the opening quarter. Riley Curtis picked up a pass that missed Sillstrop's stick and bounced home his sixth of the campaign with six seconds left in the quarter to bring Denver to within two at the end of one. Second Quarter: Yale and Denver alternated goals in the second frame with the Bulldogs outscoring the Pioneers 4-3 in the first of two middle quarters. Simmons scored twice for the Pioneers in the second, including converting Denver's only man-up chance of the first half. Sullivan got the other goal for the Pioneers in the quarter, but Yale took an 8-5 lead into the locker room. Third Quarter: Yale pushed its lead on a man-up opportunity to start the quarter, but the Pioneers responded with goals from Sillstrop, Johnny Marrocco and Jack Hannah to cut Yale's lead to 9-8. The Bulldogs pushed their lead back to two with 6:47 to play in the quarter, quickly replied on the Pioneers end with Simmons' hat trick goal to make it 10-9 Bulldogs. Sillstrop found the back of the net to tie things up, but was ruled in the crease and Yale took a grip on the momentum from that play to score the next two tallies and extend their lead to 12-9 at the end of three. Fourth Quarter: Yale got the first goal of the fourth to extend its lead back to four with 13:36 to go. The Pioneers responded with back-to-back tallies from Hannah and Sillstrop 58 seconds apart to make it 13-11. Yale stopped the run on the next possession to push the lead back to 14-11. Sullivan's 15th capped the hat trick for the graduate student to make it 14-12, but back-to-back empty netters gave the Bulldogs a 16-12 edge with 43 tics to go. Hannah got one back with 27 seconds to play, but the visitors left with a three-goal win. Notes Jack Hannah finished with his third hat trick of the season and the 15th of his career. Alex Simmons scored the third hat trick of his season and his eighth as a Pioneer. Ted Sullivan finished off his third hat trick of the season and the fifth of his career. Denver had three players score a hat trick in a game for the 28th time since the start of the 2014 season, including the second straight game. What's Next The University of Denver men's lacrosse team, Presented by Your Hometown Toyota Stores, will hit the road again next weekend when the Pioneers travel to Ohio State. Opening faceoff next Sunday is set for 12 p.m. ET/10 a.m. MT.
