ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- A fourth-quarter scoring outburst turned a close game into a comfortable win for the Golden Flyers Tuesday in men's lacrosse. Nazareth outscored visiting Brockport 6-1 over the final 15 minutes to secure a 17-10 non-conference win over the Golden Eagles at NLPA Field. The victory was the first of the season for Nazareth, which improved to 1-3. Brockport, coached by former Nazareth standout Ben Wineburg, dropped to 2-1. Nazareth had several offensive weapons as Jon Roth, Quinn McKercher and Brett Randall each amassed seven points. Roth had a career-best six goals and McKercher added five, including four in the fourth quarter. Randall had four goals and three assists. Jeremy Jacob contributed on goal and three assists and Braeden McKercher had one goal and two assists. Nazareth's defense was backstopped by junior Carson Pickeral, who had a career-high 23 saves. The Golden Flyers led 11-9 through the first 45 minutes. Then Quinn McKercher scored three times in a 79-second stretch to open the fourth quarter and Roth scored his sixth goal if the game five minutes later to push the lead to 15-9. Brockport scored an extra-man goal to interrupt Nazareth's flurry, but Nazareth closed it out with goals from Randall and Quinn McKercher. Brockport led 4-3 after one quarter as Nazareth got goals from Roth, Quinn McKercher and Randall. Nazareth opened up an 8-5 advantage in the second quarter as Roth scored twice in addition to goals from Jacob, Randall and Braeden McKercher. The second goal by Roth and the one from Braeden McKercher came on man-up just 26 seconds apart. Brockport, however, scored with just 33 seconds left in the half to draw within 8-6. That started a three-goal flurry for the Golden Eagles that included the first two goals of the third quarter that tied the score at 8-8. The teams continued to swap scores until Roth delivered the last two goals of the third quarter just 57 seconds apart to give the Golden Flyers the lead for good. Pickeral, meanwhile, was sharp in goal as he turned aside nine shots in the third quarter and five more in the fourth. He played all but one minute as he took a penalty for unnecessary roughness. Freshman Matt Keane took most of the face-offs and won 12 of 26, including five of eight in the decisive fourth quarter. Rocco Santillo and Jhovanny Oliveras each had two goals and one assist for Brockport. Nazareth is home again Saturday to host St. Lawrence in non-conference action at 12 p.m.
