Potsdam, NY – Despite a furious run that saw the team score three goals in the final minutes to reduce the margin to a single goal, the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team could not complete comeback against Ithaca College on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Bombers 11-10 in Liberty League play at Hantz Field. The Golden Knights saw their mark fall to 8-1 overall and 0-1 in conference games while Ithaca moved to 8-1 and 1-0. Clarkson will play its final non-league foe on Wednesday afternoon when the team hosts SUNY Potsdam. The first quarter was relatively quiet as both team's goalkeepers were strong by stopping point blank shots. Ithaca finally got on the scoreboard when John Sramac picked up a loose ball and scored at the 6:00 mark and Connor Brumfield added a late goal in the period by tallying with just 10 seconds remaining. Clarkson's offense got going with a Bryan Penney goal at 14:14, helping spark a small run that helped the Golden Knights tie the game midway through the period. However, Ithaca scored the next two goals, and only a final second goal from Sebastian Geiger kept the margin at one at the half. Ithaca came out strong in the third, scoring four goals in a stretch of less than five minutes, with two coming from Brumfield. The Knights rallied with two late goals in the quarter, including one on the man-up from Penney at 2:13. After goals from Brumfield and Sramac midway through the fourth, it appeared as if Clarkson would certainly come up short, but the Knights' offense was far from finished. KJ Sarni scored from Thomas Fiebich while the Knights were a man-up at 3:52, and then the duo matched the effort 87 seconds later. With less than two minutes to go and the momentum clearly in Clarkson's favor, Sebastian Geiger scored off a pass from Sarni, putting the Knights' bench into a frenzy and looking for an unlikely comeback. However, three shots in the final minute failed to find the mark, going wide, high, and saved, and Ithaca's clear attempt was enough to keep the Knights from getting another chance at the Ithaca frame before time expired. Sebastian Geiger scored three goals and added an assist for the Golden Knights while KJ Sarni matched his point total by tallying two goals and two assists. Thomas Fiebich added four assists and Bryan Penney scored three goals and added four groundballs. On face offs, Matthew Hansen was 18-for-24 with seven groundballs and Max Hoffer also added four groundballs for Clarkson> Ithaca's Connor Brumfield led the team on offense with four goals, while John Sramac added two goals and an assist for three points. Kyle Procter also scored a pair of goals and Jake Erickson had a goal and an assist. Wesley Hudkins contributed four groundballs. Clarkson led in most categories, outshooting the Bombers 60-37, though the gap was closer in terms of shots on goal at 28-25. Clarkson dominated on face offs (18-6), but Ithaca won the battle on the ground outside of face offs, winning 21-12 on loose balls beyond the 'x.' Jacob Mattice made 14 saves for the Knights, while his counterpart Ryan LaForty stopped 18 shots for Ithaca.
