Senior attackman Elliot Nelson scored three goals and set up another, however Colorado College ran into a red-hot goaltender and dropped a 14-7 decision to Illinois Wesleyan University in the season opener for both teams on Saturday in Memphis. Thomas Laduzinsky made 18 saves while going the distance for IWU in the first-ever meeting between the programs. Five different Spartans scored a goal before Makay Hansen put the Tigers on the board with 1:37 remaining in the first quarter. CC was within striking distance after Anders Erickson scored with 5:35 to play in the second period, but IWU scored five in a row to open an 11-2 lead. After Nelson got one back for the Tigers with 2:40 remaining in the third quarter, the Spartans notched a pair of man-up goals early in the fourth. Jack Haims and John Lawrence scored for the Tigers during the final 4:04. Charlie Harrington went 14-for-22 at the dot and picked up a game-high eight ground balls Colorado College. Sam DiMaio led the Tigers with four caused turnovers and picked up a ground ball. The Tigers won 16 of 25 faceoffs and finished with a 40-36 edge in ground balls. Both teams launched 46 shots. Ben Anastos stopped 13 shots for CC, reaching double figures for the sixth time in his career. Cam Devlin played the final 17:40 and made two saves in collegiate debut.
