WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson men's lacrosse team tallied the final four goals to pick up a 12-10 victory over visiting Heidelberg University Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference game at Alexandre Stadium.
The win is the second straight for the Presidents, who improve to 2-3 overall in 2022. The loss drops the Student Princes to 0-5.
The game was back and forth throughout. Heidelberg gained a 2-1 lead after the opening quarter. W&J used a 4-2 edge in the second quarter to gain a narrow 5-4 halftime advantage. Alex Strain (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) and Sean McCaffrey (Silver Spring, Md. / Albert Einstein) recorded a pair of scores each in the first half.
Heidelberg seized the momentum out of halftime, as the visitors ripped off four straight goals to open the third quarter. A goal by Ben Evans gave Heidelberg an 8-5 lead at the 4:24 mark. However, Sam Snider (Morgantown, W.Va./University) came through in a big way. Snider scored at the 3:57 mark and again at the 2:53 mark off a pass from Carter Watts (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) to cut the Heidelberg lead to a single goal (8-7) entering the fourth.
The Student Princes held the lead for nearly 10 minutes of the fourth quarter. A score by Strain from Watts brought W&J within a goal before Snider tallied an unassisted score to even the match at 10-10 with 5:42 remaining.
Strain played a role in the final two goals for the Presidents, as he notched a pair of assists to propel W&J to the win. Zach Mey (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) tallied the eventual game-winning goal with 2:04 to play. McCaffery scored in a wide open net with 14 seconds left to finish off the victory for the Presidents.
Strain, Snider and McCaffery each recorded hat tricks with three goals apiece. Watts finished with a team-best six points (one goal, five assists). Strain tallied a five-point effort in the win.
Defensively, James Deiuliis (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) finished with nine ground balls and five caused turnovers. Luke Geister (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) aided the defensive efforts with eight ground balls and five caused turnovers while Nathan Petrarco (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) added four ground balls and three caused turnovers.
Henry Beardwood (Wilmington, Del. / Salesianum School) finished with 11 saves in the winning effort in goal.
W&J hosts Mount St. Joseph for a non-conference game Saturday, March 19. Start time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
