CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton University men's lacrosse team wrapped up its 2022 season Friday night, falling 20-6 to Massachusetts Maritime Academy at Dave Wolk Stadium. The Spartans conclude the year 2-14 overall and 2-6 in Little East Conference play. Mass Maritime closes the regular season 7-8 and 5-3 in the LEC, earning the No. 4 seed in the upcoming LEC Tournament. The Spartans were outshot 62-30, with Mass Maritime also holding advantages in ground balls (44-35), turnovers (20-32) and face-offs (15-13). The Bucs scored twice on the man-advantage. Castleton was 15-of-28 on the clear with MMA going 14-of-18. Castleton honored its 10-man senior class prior to the contest, as Connor Rider, Ryan Palmisano, Griffin Van Niel, Collin Johnson, Will Briggs, Peyton Mavrides, Ian March, Jay Venezia, Andrew McCarthy and Ben Forte competed in their final collegiate game. Chris LaBonte scored four times for Castleton, while Sean Kimura added two assists. Rider, one of the seniors, found the back of the cage as well alongside Casey Meczywor. Briggs and Cam Frankenhoff added assists. LaBonte led the team with five ground balls, Meczywor had four and Palmisano, McCarthy and Finn Miller had three each. McCarthy also caused two turnovers. Chris Wilk started in goal, making 10 saves in the first half with 11 goals allowed. Mavrides played the second half, stopping eight shots with nine goals allowed. Spencer Jones led the Bucs with five points on four goals and an assist, while Mitchell Maida had four goals himself. Nick Lamattina had a hat-trick. Brian Rosher won 11-of-19 face-offs and grabbed a game-high eight ground balls, while Maida added five ground balls. Leo Allgaier caused four turnovers and scored once. Sean Lally stopped seven shots with four goals allowed in 45 minutes. Viktor Wright allowed two goals with four saves in the final quarter. The Bucs sailed out to a 5-0 lead in the first quarter before LaBonte scored unassisted to make it 5-1. Two more MMA goals made it 7-1 after the opening quarter. Castleton was blanked in the second quarter, but held Mass Maritime to only four goals—one of which came on an MMA man-up chance—to trail 11-1 at the break. The deficit grew to 15-1 as the Bucs scored the first four goals out of halftime before LaBonte struck again—this time from Briggs. He scored his second of the quarter and third of the game just more than a minute later to make it 16-3, and added his fourth score of the game with 1:12 left in the frame. MMA scored with just eight seconds left in the quarter to lead 18-4 through 45 minutes. After a goal by MMA opened the fourth, Rider got on the board on an assist by Kimura. Meczywor capped the scoring for the night with a late fourth-quarter goal assisted by Frankenhoff.
