Duke senior attackman Cameron Mulé scored with 1:55 left in overtime to cap a 6-0 run to end the game and give the third-ranked Blue Devils a thrilling 13-12 comeback victory over No. 2 Notre Dame in ACC men's lacrosse action in Koskinen Stadium. It is Duke's third overtime victory this season and fourth top-five win of the year. Duke finishes its home slate with a perfect 8-0 record and moves to 12-1 overall and 4-1 against ACC foes. Notre Dame falls to 6-2 overall and 2-2 in league action. The victory is the program's 600th win as the Blue Devils become the 14th Division I team to reach the benchmark. The Blue Devils, trailing 12-7 with 8:41 left in the fourth quarter, scored the game's final six goals and held Notre Dame scoreless for the final 10:36 to avenge their lone loss of the season. Senior Nakeie Montgomery and graduate student Michael Sowers scored four of the six goals, while Sowers had a hand in the final three tallies of the year. Montgomery, who recorded his 100th career point with his assist, finished the night with three goals and an assist, while Sowers had four goals and one assist. Six of Duke's 10 second-half goals came from Montgomery and Sowers. After Duke chipped away at the five-goal deficit to pull within two, 12-10, Sowers took over in the final minute to give the Blue Devils life. With just under two minutes remaining, the Blue Devils' ride, which was excellent in the closing minutes of the game, once again wreaked havoc on Notre Dame's clear as the Irish went offside and gave Duke the ball back. Joe Robertson got a great look at goal, but was denied by the crossbar. With a new 80 seconds on the shot clock, Sowers got the ball in his stick and wasted no time in rifling a shot 15 yards past the Notre Dame goaltender's offside hip to make it a one-goal game, 12-11. The Blue Devils won the ensuing faceoff and took over with 26 seconds left. Sowers once again took the ball and ran down the left alley and stung the low right corner with 13 seconds left to force overtime and set up Mulé for the overtime winner. In overtime, freshman Jake Naso won the faceoff cleanly and Duke got into the box and called a timeout. The Blue Devils came out of the huddle looking for the winner. Sophomore Dyson Williams caught a pass in traffic and drew a 30-second holding penalty to give Duke the extra man advantage. After not having played all game, Mulé came off the bench for Duke's lone extra man opportunity of the night. The Blue Devils swung the ball around and it eventually landed in Sowers' stick again. The quarterback to Duke's offense found a cutting Mulé. The senior extra man specialist made a great catch and one touched it into the net for his seventh goal of the season and first career game winner. Prior to overtime, Notre Dame appeared to win in the final eight seconds of regulation, but play was whistled dead as Notre Dame attackman Pat Kavanagh lost his shoe prior to getting the shot off. The Fighting Irish dominated the action for over three quarters, leading by as many as six. Notre Dame held Duke to just 14 first-half shots and forced nine Blue Devil turnovers in that span. The Blue Devils, trailing 10-6 after three quarters, had just 23 shots heading into the fourth quarter. Duke turned the corner halfway through the fourth period with Montgomery providing the spark to the offense. Defensively, the Blue Devils kept the Irish to just six shots in the final frame and forced five turnovers. Kavanagh had seven points in the opening half, but was held without a point in the final 30 minutes, finishing the night with seven. Robertson caused two turnovers on the Duke ride, while senior defenseman Raines Shamburger also had two caused turnovers in his first career start. Naso was solid at the faceoff X, winning 15-of-29 and picking up 10 ground balls. In goal, Mike Adler made 10 saves for the Blue Devils, while Liam Entenmann had 14 stops. Duke has an extended break for final exams and will close out the regular season May 2 at No. 4 North Carolina. Faceoff is set for 4 p.m., on ACC Network.
