The Stony Brook women's lacrosse team shook off a slow start and ultimately breezed into the America East finals with a 25-13 win against fourth-seeded UMBC on Thursday at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium. Aiming for their eighth straight conference title, the top-seeded Seawolves will host the winner of second-seeded UAlbany and third-seeded Vermont on Saturday at 1 p.m. CLAIM COMPLIMENTARY TICKETS FOR SATURDAY's 1 P.M. AMERICA EAST CHAMPIONSHIP GAME HERE. Stony Brook's goal output was the most ever in an America East playoff game, surpassing the Seawolves' 22 in the finals against UAlbany in 2018. Ally Kennedy finished with seven goals, matching an America East tournament record and pulling even with Kylie Ohlmiller, who was in attendance, for second in program history at 252. "I'm humbled, honestly," Kennedy said. "The fact that I get to share it with a Stony Brook icon, and also one of my closest friends, is really awesome. I know that I have her support no matter what. To have my name in the record book alongside her is really cool. As I was leaving the field, I saw her. And she told me I'm 'OK' at lacrosse." Stony Brook actually trailed 4-0 to open Thursday's semifinal — the most consecutive goals by an opponent to open a game this season. But the Seawolves awakened, pulling even at 5 on America East Offensive Player of the Year Taryn Ohlmiller's goal with 10:03 remaining in the first half and then claiming the lead for good, 8-7, on the America East Midfielder of the Year Kennedy's goal with 3:47 to go until halftime. Stony Brook also got a jolt in goal when Hayley Hunt entered for Kameron Halsall two minutes later. Kennedy's goal sparked a stretch in which Stony Brook scored 10 of the game's 11 goals. Kennedy had four ground balls, passing Danielle Werner (167) for third all time. Ohlmiller contributed five goals, while Sarah Pulis had four and Kailyn Hart had a hat trick. "It's playoff lacrosse," Kennedy said. "Although we've played them two times already, it's a different atmosphere. It's win or go home. We just had to wrap our heads around the fact that this is our game." Stony Brook now has won 53 straight games against America East competition. Coach Joe Spallina said postgame that he had hoped to rest his starters for much of Thursday's game in preparation for the finals. But the early dogfight had its value. "It may not be a perfect script, but it's a situation where you grow from that," Spallina said.
