DANBURY, Conn. – After blowing past Castleton University on Saturday, the Western Connecticut State University men's lacrosse team stormed to a 20-3 win over the visiting University of St. Joseph (Conn.) in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday night at the Westside Athletic Complex. Rookie attack Julian Duque (Mastic, N.Y.) led the WestConn scoring barrage with eight goals, while junior attack Benjamin Hawthorne (Manorville, N.Y.) added three scoring strikes and three assists. Classmate and reigning Little East Conference Player of the Week Trey Aronow (Holbrook, N.Y.) continued his stellar play with a hat trick and a pair of helpers. Senior Matt Guerin (East Longmeadow, Mass.), junior Noah Mocksfield (Colchester, Conn.) and sophomore Ryan Paltauf (Southbury, Conn.) each netted goals for the visiting Bluejays. The hosts controlled the majority of play as they outshot the visitors by a 47-33 margin. Senior face off specialist Jonathan Russack-Baker (Groton, Conn.) won 10-of-19 draws for WestConn. WCSU began the game with a flurry and would hold a 5-0 lead to end the first quarter. Duque netted his first goal of the game to get things started before Hawthorne buried his second to cap the scoring assault. They built the advantage up to 9-0 before Paltauf tallied a breakaway goal off a failed clearing attempt to put St. Joseph on the board. In the third, Duque connected on his team-leading 37th goal of the season to widen the gap to 17-2 heading into the fourth. Rookie midfielder Ryan Baci (Merrick, N.Y.) tickled the twine for his first career goal before classmate Kai Bruneau (West Haven, Conn.) wrapped things up with his third. WestConn sophomore goalkeeper Brendan Grove (Cheshire, Conn.) improved to 8-1 overall and turned aside nine shots in three quarters of play. Bluejay graduate student Joseph Varagnolo (Centereach, N.Y.) dropped to 1-1 and finished with seven saves in three quarters. With the win, WCSU improved to 8-1 overall while St. Joseph dropped to 4-5. WestConn returns to action for an LEC tilt at Plymouth State on Saturday at 11 a.m.
