DANBURY, Conn. - Rookie attack Julian Duque (Mastic, N.Y.) tallied a game-high four goals and one assist, while junior Benjamin Hawthorne (Manorville, N.Y.) also notched five points (two goals, three assists) to propel the Western Connecticut State University men's lacrosse squad to a 20-4 victory over visiting non-league foe Curry College on an overcast Sunday afternoon at the Westside Athletic Complex. Junior midfielder Jac Cutillo (Kings Park, N.Y.) added a hat trick for the hosts while classmate Trey Aronow (Holbrook, N.Y.) chipped in with a pair of scoring strikes and one helper. Senior face off specialist Jonathan Russack-Baker (Groton, Conn.) won 15 of his 23 attempts at the X as WestConn controlled the majority of possession. Sophomore netminder Brendan Grove (Cheshire, Conn.) improved to 5-1 and racked up nine saves for the hosts, while Curry saw a trio of players shield the net as they accumulated 11 stops. With the win, WestConn improved to 5-1 overall while the Colonels dropped to 3-4. WestConn began the contest with a 5-1 run and would not look back. Cutillo connected on the opening marker, good for his fifth goal of the year. Duque took a feed from Hawthorne and found the back of the net to round out the first quarter. The hosts grew the advantage to 14-3 when Aronow tickled the twine shortly before halftime. It was a similar story in the second half. The WestConn defense was tenacious, forcing 23 turnovers for the game, while coughing the ball up just 14 times. Sophomore midfielder Joseph Boss (Holbrook, N.Y.) concluded the day when he fired a shot home after a pretty pass from rookie attack Nate Caldwell (Cranford, N.J.). WestConn returns to action when they host SUNY Oneonta in a rescheduled game from last week. The opening face off is slated for 7 p.m.
