The Colorado Mesa University Mavericks held the Coker College Cobras without a goal for more than 38 minutes, taking a 12-0 lead en-route to a comfortable 21-5 road win on Monday afternoon here at the Coker Athletic Field. Fifteen different Maverick players found the back of the net as the Mavericks dominated possession, winning 27 of 30 face-offs while out-shooting the Cobras, 62-19. With the win, the Mavericks wrapped up a stretch of three games in six days throughout the southeastern part of the country. They went 2-1. The Cobras fell to 0-3. Redshirt freshman Trent Pernell and freshman JJ Brummett led the list of CMU goal scorers as he scored three. Pernell also had an assist as he and Hunter Holcomb, who had three assists, both had 4-point afternoons. Meanwhile, Jake Brummett won 17 of 19 face-offs and scooped up 14 ground balls while starting face-off man Dylan Checketts won 10 of his 11 battles while claiming six ground balls as CMU doubled up Coker, 48-24 in the team ground ball battle. Maverick Freshman net-minder Reece Sullivan made five saves in the first half to earn the win while Mac Bayless played the second half. The Mavericks led 4-0 after the first quarter thanks in part to an opening minute goal from Alex Blatt. Pernell had two of his goals in a span of less than a minute just after the mid-point of the quarter. Sergio Pelayo also had a goal and assist in the quarter. The goals kept coming in the second quarter as Joey Grzetic IV, James Steinke, Micah Payton, Jed Brummett, Gavin Wallace and Holcomb all scored. Steinke's was on a power play. Caden Hathaway and Drew Eickelman then scored the first two goals of the third quarter before Coker finally got on the scoreboard with a man-up goal with 7:40 left in the frame. The Mavericks then went on another 6-0 scoring run at the end of the third quarter and into the fourth as Jake Keyes and JJ Brummett both scored twice in the stretch, which also featured a goal from Ethan Points. Levi McCoy scored the Mavs' last goal with 3:13 left, just 18 seconds after JJ Brummett completed his hat-trick. Cal Gibson had two goals to lead the Cobras, who sent five different men to the face-off spot. The Mavericks will now return home to prepare for their Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opener against rival Westminster on Sunday, Feb. 27.
