DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - I think it is safe to say that one of the best surprises early this spring has been the play of the Davenport men's lacrosse team. They have strung together three straight wins and played excellent defense in the second half during Thursday's 14-8 win at Embry-Riddle. The Panthers were down 8-5 at halftime but did not allow a second-half goal. They scored the game's final nine goals after Embry-Riddle scored with 11 seconds left in the first half. Daniel Milano continues his stellar play at goalkeeper and made 11 saves in the win. He has double-digit saves in all four games this season for a total of 48. "I am extremely proud of how our guys responded in the second half," said head coach Chris Esquivel. "We are a really close team and they played their hearts out for each other not just today but all week. These guys never quit! We knew Embry-Riddle had a few different offensive sets so once we saw what they stuck with, we were able to adjust where our help came from." Embry-Riddle held a 5-1 lead with 3:57 left in the first quarter. Christian Hofer scored two of those goals for the Eagles while Marcus Needham had a goal and two assists in that early stretch. DU began to claw its way back with three straight goals to cut it to 5-4. Dylan Day, Keelan McKouen, and James Johnston each scored and for Johnston it was his second goal of the game. Jordan Caskenette was quiet in the first half but got the comeback going at 12:17 of the third quarter with the first of his three goals. Day scored at 9:31 from Adam Smellie and then Smellie assisted on another Caskenette goal at 6:41 to make it 8-8. Austin Thompson scored his second of three goals at 3:34 of the third which would be the game-winner. DU added five goals in the fourth quarter to pull away. Five different players scored in the quarter including Johnston, Day, McKouen, Thompson, and Caskenette. Day, Caskenette, Johnston, and Thompson each had three goals. Milano and Trent Eichbauer led the team with five groundballs. Lucas Renzetti was solid in the face-off department with 13 wins
