ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Nolan Dalep (Victoria, British Columbia, Canada/Claremont Secondary School) continued his hot start to the season scoring six goals and adding two assists in No. 18 Lewis men's lacrosse 18-6 win over Wheeling in the home opener on Saturday at Lewis Stadium. The Flyers improve to 2-0 on the season while the Cardinals fall to 0-1. Evan Clement (San Diego, Calif./Mt. Carmel) got Lewis on the board first with an unassisted goal 5:20 into the contest. Wheeling scored the next two as Jacob Knippel and Mike Andersson scored twice in the span of 2:08 to take the lead. Drew Kask (Maple Ridge, British Columbia, Canada/Dr. Charles Best Secondary School) tied the game on an assist from Baden Boyenko (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada/St. Joseph) with 5:12 left in the opening stanza but the Cardinals scored with 62 seconds left in the quarter to take a 3-2 lead into the second frame. The Flyers dominated the second quarter scoring nine times with Dalep accounting for three of those while Boyenko added two and Kask, Kevin Blaz (McHenry, Ill./Marian Central Catholic), Nate McLean (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake Central) and Hunter Loprino (Woodstock, Ill./St. Viator) scoring a goal apiece. Lewis extended its lead to 12-3 1:44 into the second half when Dalep scored again with an assist from Drew Andre (Pitt Meadows, British Columbia, Canada/Pitt Meadows Secondary School). Wheeling scored twice in less than a minute to trim the lead seven but the Flyers scored the final six goals of stanza to take an 18-5 lead into the final 15 minutes. The only goal in the fourth quarter belonged to the Cardinals as Dakota Strong scored 1:11 into the frame. Lewis finished the contest outshooting Wheeling 50-17 including 32-11 in shots on goal. Dalep led the way for the Flyers while Boyenko chipped in with four goals, Kask added three, Clement, Blaz, Loprino, McLean and Stephen Herman (Chesapeake, Va./Grassfield) added one each. Lewis forced 29 turnovers in the contest and scooped up 52 ground balls. The Flyers were 15-of-17 in clear attempts and won 24 of 28 faceoffs with Peter Carlson (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South) winning 19 of those. Zack Merwin (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) caused three turnovers and Carlson picked up 11 ground balls. Andersson and Knippel led the Cardinals with two goals each and Joshua Wolford made 13 saves. Lewis returns to action next Saturday as it travels to Erie, Pa., to take on fourth ranked Mercyhurst at 11 a.m. (CST).
