Providence scored the first goal of the game just 1:22 into the contest, but junior Jack Wilson (1g, 1a) answered with the Terriers' first goal of 2017 to tie the game with 7:02 left in the opening quarter. The Friars took a 2-1 lead into the second quarter and extended that advantage to 3-1 during a timer-on situation with less than five minutes to go in the half, but senior Cal Dearth (1g) cut that lead in half with a goal with 1:22 left. Then, during an extra-man opportunity, freshman John MacLean's (1g) first collegiate goal sent the teams to the locker room tied, 3-3. Providence came out of the break with four straight goals before junior Ryan Hilburn's first goal of the game made it a 7-4 game after three quarters. Ruiz made it a 7-5 Providence lead with 8:43 remaining in regulation when he drove from X and scored from the near side thanks to Hilburn's third assist of the game. After Homire cut the deficit to 7-6, Ruiz sent the game to overtime when he found himself alone on the right side and sprinted to the net before finishing the play. The Terriers won the opening faceoff in overtime and nearly won it when MacLean rang a shot off the post. BU enjoyed two man-up chances in the extra periods, finally converting at the tail end of the latter one to emerge victorious.
