CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The 16th-ranked and fourth-seeded Queens University of Charlotte Royals defeated fifth-seeded Newberry College, 14-13, in overtime this evening at Dickson Field to advance to the semifinal round of the South Atlantic Conference Men's Lacrosse Championships. Tyler Ewen would score today's game-winner at the buzzer in overtime to lift the Royals past the Wolves for the second time this season. The senior attacker led the Royals with six points on four goals and two assists in the win. Kealan Pilon totaled three goals while Pat Marks had two goals and two assists. Ryan Lightsey and Jack Royer added two goals apiece. After leading 5-1 coming out of the first quarter of action, the Royals were outscored 4-3 in the second period. They would take an 8-5 lead into the halftime break. Both teams added three to the scoreboard in the third as Queens still held a three-goal lead, 11-8. However, a 5-2 run for the Wolves in the fourth would force tonight's game into overtime where Ewen scored the game-winner with zeros on the clock. Both teams finished with 46 shots, though the Royals would trail in shots on goal, 28-23. Newberry also won the battle for ground balls, 43-33, and edged Queens at the face-off winning 16-of-30. In goal, Queens' William Powley earned his 11th win of the year after totaling 15 saves. The Wolves were led by Scott Reed who totaled four goals and two assists for six points. Baker Westmoreland and Curtis Bukta added two goals and one assist. The Royals will face top-seeded Limestone on Friday at 4:30 p.m. in Hickory, N.C., on the campus of Lenoir-Rhyne University.
